MrJoe,

Yep, a tear jerker for sure. And you know her, so you know what I mean. Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving (it is already wanparuhat there) and it will be so here in another hour. ÝI will sign off with this post -- am heading next door to have a little nip of Mekong with my partner in crime. A fitting way to chime in the holiday, and my new "soapy slave" moniker.

Take care, and enjoy your turkey day!

Nothing much to add on the khun and ther as MrJoe has already given the perfect answer. I learned that ther is said in the same way. I asked a TG as I have noticed that in the Thai lovesongs it is always ther.

thanks for the replies guys, but i'm still a little confused.
my girl wrote 'tran dak tor',is this that much different to 'chan rak tor'?.

i gather 'chan' is the feminine?.
is 'rak tor' a universal saying?,when i said 'chan rak tor' to her she was thrilled.
was i wrong in saying 'chan'?.
i must admit when i hear it in songs,it's always from a female singer.

i only said i thought she was talking Laos because that was what i was told.
is there much difference between Thai,Isaan and Laos?.

where is Linda1 when you want her?.

Nokna,

My friend...! Chan is the female form of Phom. But since you are in girlie's things like your username and brushing TG's hair, you can go on using chan while speaking of yourself.

Bandit,

You are simply not correct. Pom is exclusively male. Chan, though much more commonly used by females, can be used by males.

Nokna,
As has been said before the difference between Thai, Lao and Isaarn are not great but they are real and enough that the languages are certainly not interchangeable. Think, Spanish, Italian and French, for example.

Now you can ignore that and wait for Linda1 -- don't blame you a bit -- but there it is. She'll have to explain "tran dak tor" because I haven't a clue.

Unless by Ý"dak" you mean a particular word inThai that means "eat". It is extremely impolite but may be used by BGs and such.

My TG girl signed off an email with the following:

"Chan kit tung khun mak mak".

I know the first part is I miss you, but what does the "mak mak" mean??

Thanks, KTM

Ktmdude,

mak, mak means "much, much" literally, but translates better as "very much." This is a phenomenon linguists call "reduplication," which the Thais seem to do a lot, lot. There is even a symbol in the Thai language that does this, so you would write "mahk" followed by this symbol.

I always say "peng mahk, mahk" whenever my TGF quotes a price on something, especially if it is a really cheap price. Sort of a standing joke between us. Never fails to get a laugh from her (and sometimes a good natured "kee neaow").

OK thanks BB and BK.

Does anyone know of a Thai/English translation web site where the Thai word(s) can be typed in, and the English translation given?? I did find a site some weeks ago but couldn't get the translation working.

Thanks, KTM
