Actually, I think I've more often used the phrase:
"Gon narak jang leuy"
Which of course means, "You have a really cute butt!"
Typical Usage:
P: Gon narak jang leuy!
B: Mai chai. Uan mahk.
P: Jing jing, suay mahk.
B: Mai cheua. Bpahk wahn.
I never really know if they're understanding me, but I get away with it because I'm so incredibly handsome. Your mileage may vary!

Ballsburstin,I have been called 'bah bah bah bow' many times too by my Thai GF.After she had called me this so often I asked her what it means and she said it means insane.I think you are probably right on your theory that it must be slang.

Yeah slang would be my guess, but that's why I was hoping MrJoe would weigh in on this. He's got a bit of the Isaan dialect under his belt. BTW, my TGF told me that in Isaan, there is no "ka" or "kup", just (I think she said) "da" or "dua" or something - can't really remember how she pronounced it. Men and women used the same polite ending. I plan on grilling her more on this, as I find this very surprising. If I get to BKK to see her in Feb, think I will have her write some of this down in Thai so I can see what it is she is saying in Isaan. Then maybe forward some to BK, perhaps he can publish it as a companion to his Thai phrasebook.
BTW, do any of the bro's know if there is an accessible Isaan language book out there somewhere?

Ya you her da da a lot in Issan. I love how my bkk Issan girls could be on the phone all strict polite proper thai for something one minute and then the next minute with pee sao slangin' it up Issan.

BB, If Isaan language is the same as Lao, then all you need to do is to get some Lao book. There are a few available. I have seen dictionaries and phrasebooks in Asia Books.

I am Thai. and i'll try my best to help you truly understand the word 'bah'
'Bah' usually means crazy, or insane. it's not short for "Pra-sat", although the meaning of both words are pretty close.
you said you were called "bah bah bah pao" with the third syllable inflected with high tone. it's because because "bah pao" is short for "bah ru plao", meaning "are you out of your mind?"
'ru' with a high tone is used in a question.
'ru' is often dropped in casual conversation, or sometimes said quickly you can hardly tell it's another word. so that's why the third 'bah' is inflected with a high tone.
girls would say this to you when you do stupid things, funny things, or even when you give them a compliment.
in the latter case, it's kinda like some [english speaking]women would deny it when you tell them "you are so beautiful." but i can safely say that it's part of Thai (pop) culture that a girl would say "are you crazy?" when they are complimented.
as for 'da', the closest pronounciation i can think of is 'der' (like "under") isaarn people use it as 'krub' or 'ka' as a polite ending to the sentence.

Thanx Timmer: I don't know why I made that mistake as the word is indeed "Brasat" or "Prasat" not "Basat".
As for the "Bah ru plao", we covered that and I said that it "ru" was an interrogative (as you confirmed) but I failed to go on to explain that it was shotened from "ru plao". In any case, I think Balls was reffering not to that but to another phrase entirely.
Again much thanks for the input. I'm sure all of the Falangs are most grateful to get a lesson from a Thai rather than some Falang like me.

Very interesting analysis, and really appreciate a Thai person helping us with this (don't worry MrJoe, nungsao still loves you anyway, ha!). That explains why the third "bah" in the phrase sounds a little different -- she never pronounces the "R" sound, always substitutes "L" so maybe that's why when she says the third "bah" it sounds like "bau" (whereas I've heard some Bangkok Thais roll their "r" like Hispanic people). But what about the first two "bah" syllables? Are they simply reduplication, or are they different words entirely? BTW, Timmerr, are you fluent in Isaan as well as regular Thai?

it's very common that thai people say the same word repeatedly. i bet y'all heard them girls say "no good, no good" once or twice, didn't you?
so my guess is the first two syllables are also 'bah'.
as for the third 'bah', i forgot to mention that there's a few variations on how to say "are you out of your mind?" here goes,
bah ru plao
bah ler
bah ah pao(which is probably what you heard)
Bah laew
ja bah ler
etc...
i grew up with Isaan maids so i can pretty much understand conversations in isaarn but i wouldnt say i'm fluent. but if you have any question regarding isaan, i'd be more than happy to answer.
