Another good one haha. Though I often get asked 'pahn fai daeng mai? gla pahn fai daeng mai?' (pass the red light? Dare to pass the red light?) etc...... One's life in one's hands I guess... It's often a joke, followed by "Dtum-ruat jup nae non!" Police will bust ya!

well... so much for speaking...

Anyway, Minder, thanks though haam sup is right: the tone is different, so there's no confusion.....

Stink Fetish !!??!! - Hey, that's only a half-truth...

No worries. I kinda figured you knew what you were doing - I was as much fishing for an explanation as anything else.

Your statement "the tone is different, so there's no confusion" makes me think "you lucky sod" because my tone detection is just lousy - so much so I have concluded I am "tone deaf".

If I know the tone is say, high, falling or whatever I can use that tone and get the word correct most times. If I repeat what I hear - what I thought I heard - a blank look is the normal response.

So for me - if I don't know the correct tone in advance - even the most basic question is not asked till I have thought of three or four back up phrases to quickly clarify what I am talking about - and what I am not talking about - "Look here, for the last time - we did NOT ask for school girls." (Michal Palin - Ripping Yarns ) enjoy.

Minder,

No condescension intended here, but I was once tone-deaf regarding Thai, too.

As I stated in another thread, no one method of learning works for everybody, and I failed miserably until I encountered a Thai teacher, who knew the problems we English speakers face when learning a tonal language.

And lest anyone mistake me for fluent, I still have problems with it when I am in 'compose/translate/speak' mode. For me, brief bursts of fluency occur when stuff that I have heard and used a thousand times just pops out in a sentence.

Although it is by far the most time consuming, I think listening has the best chance of helping you overcome your 'tone-deafness', and listening with a good teacher is even better.

Really, I don't think there is such a thing as intrinsic 'tone deafness', at least when it comes to learning Thai. It will come.

Well, Minder and haam sup... good points.... Myself, I often get forgetful about which consonant is what tone etc. And I too couldn't make them out for a long time either... Just like some of the exotic vowel sounds seemed so impossible at first...

For me it just took endless hours of exposure and listening and mimicry (attempted mimicry) until I was finally producing sounds like everyone else, Thais I mean. It began with certain words... then I noticed similarities... and the written rules mapping it out... and eventually could pronounce a new word either by repeating after or reading it and going for it... It takes time to learn a whole new order of sound.

I've had this debate before,, told I was incorrect by many in BKTF,,,, nom yao is actually a correct alternative according to 20 Thais' surveyed

Nom yao mai?, followed by the physical action of throwing a breast over ones shoulder always brings a laugh.

Although LY thinks I should stay out because of my lack of fluency,, I dissagree,,,, those that are not fluent but maybe have 300 or 400 words to work with may indeed find my 'primitive" translations of help. It's amazing what one can get across with a minimum of words when challenged.

It never ceases to amaze me that when people become experts at something they forget how difficult it was at the beginning.I often think back to my first driving lessons in my mates rotary engined Mazda RX3,, f*** I stalled the thing 20 times,, nearly left the gearbox on the road and kept forgeting to put the blinker on. Now some 25 years later I can drive nearly anything. My son asked for some lessons 2 years ago,, did I EXPECT HIM TO DRIVE LIKE ME???, NO,, HE STALLED IT, CRASHED THE GEARBOX EVERY THIRD CHANGE ETC ETC. But now he is an excellent driver.

YMMV

Mel.
