Just in case anybody is interested, ÝI too have had a TGF from Issan for about a year now. ÝThe translations TPE gives are the same as the one my TGF gives. Examples: Kow muk jow - ÝI love you Sap-e-lee-der - Aloi mahk, mahk hang, hang, Ý Ý- mahk, mahk e-lee Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý - really, Lai, lai Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý - mahk, mahk Bor Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý- Ýno, Ýor mai? Pua Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý - Sahmee Ja Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý- Ýyes for females. jow la-wung lai lai der - Ýyou take care of yourself, very Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý much. The e-mail and phone endings usually go like this: Kow luk Jow e-lee, hang, hang, lai, lai, Der!!!! Jow luk Kow e-lee Bor? If this helps.....I too am trying to learn Issan, Ýbut it is not easy and the English/Lao dictionary doesn't work too well and I find they kinda take offense, even though you're only trying, when you speak Lao to them as they are quick to say I am not Lao. Not to get off the topic, but on another thread I read the guy saying "jet" or "7" as "yet". ÝI did this many years ago on a golf course when they asked what club I wanted. ÝMy answer was "yet", ÝI don't think the caddie came within 50 yards from me after that..... The other problem I ran into, again on the golf course was I was always saying "mai Koy" Ýtrying to say "never". ÝAfter learning what the problem, and again a caddie looking funny at me, ÝI later found I can say "mai kar-ee" and they accept that as "never". Ý No this is not Issan, Ýjust sharing a story.

There is a Thai-Isan-Lao Phrasebook by Asger Mollerup, which is available at Asia Books. It gives quite a good list of phrases, each one being given in all three languages (both native script and phonetic rendering). There is also a CD, which provides the phrases in Thai and Isaan. This would be good to use in the company of Ýnative Isaan speaker and should help a lot to answer the questions asked on this thread.
