A quickie question. I understand that Isaan is in the Northeast of Thailand near the Laos border but I have had no luck finding it on my map. Is it the name of a province (I think they call them that..like Chonburi or Kanchanaburi for example) or does it simply mean Northeast?

Also I have heard "No pom-pim!" a lot. I had always assumed that was pigeon English for No Problem cuz it seems to mean that but I read something somewhere that suggested that may actually be Thai for essentially the same thing. Is Pom-pim Thai or???

Hi Cyborg,

here is some useful info about the Isan region, as this region has been a melting pot for Thai/Lao/Khmer culture.

http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Isan

There you can also find a list, which 19 provinces are covered by the Isan region.

Thais usually refer to the provinces, when they say where they come from, but like Americans when they refer to'the mid-west', the Thai do it as follows:
Phak nuer= the northern region
Phak Isan= the 'north-eastern' region
Phak 'Glaang'= the 'middle' region (BKK area)
Phak Dai= the southern region

So Griffin, Is Pom-Pim simply pigeon English or is it an actual Thai word that simply sounds like Problem?

No pom-pim?

ahahahah - that's something I'd never want to hear from a TG. I don't know about you guys but in my native language that sounds very much like "No pompino". Geee, life in Thailand would be a drag if I didn't get that, and on regular basis.

OK guys...I guess no one really knows the answer to my question as asked.
I will try to ask it more clearly so that I may get a clear answer.

When my TG says "No pom-pim" is she attempting to speak English or is she speaking Thai?

English or Thai?

It has always seemed obviously an attempt to speak English but I think I saw something somewhere that made me believe it is actually a Thai phrase.
