I wish that when King Rama VI was then the absolute monarch of the country, he would have followed on his own idea and change things by the stroke of a law. He wrote in 1912 in a letter to the Siam Society on a proposed system for the Thai language: "I propose that the tone value of the Siamese consonants might be ignored altogether... since the context would always make clear the meaning... For similar reasons given above I think it would be best to ignore all Siamese tone accents." Why didn't this happen if the King himself proposed it?

Well I guess total chaos... Most of the Thais seem to have 1. a lack of imagination 2. pretend to have a lackof imagination 3. ar just too lazy to imagine My overall vocabulary is good and also word order, but my tonal skills are average. On many occasions the people I talk to seem NOT to understand me, even my mum who speaks also German and English fluent without accent. So I think it is 1-3. shark68

I think that when your own mother doesn't understand you, your problems (or maybe hers) are beyond your 1-3 above.
