When getting into a cab, I have had some problems getting myself understood Therefore can anyone give the thai translation to the following Take me to Soi Cowboy please Take me to Nana Plaza Please Take me to Patpong please Now I know it must be listed somewhere on the forum, but please do go mad at me for starting this thread.

Very easy... Just say "paļ" (that means : "go") before all the names and as you are a man, it is more polite to finish your sentences with "khrup". Example: "paļ Patpong, khrup!" = "Go to Patpong, please!".

Subject to transliteration.... Bai Soi Cowboy khrap Bai Sukhumvit Soi Sii khrap (find your own way from there Bai Patpong khrap. if you try to form a full polite sentance to explain, you will be even less understood. You could take the Skytrain all are written in English and maybe you'll find it easier

thanks guys for the help, I have thought of one other thing that would work for Newbies in Thailand. When I last visited the Landmark hotel gives you a little card with the address on it in Thai, so no matter which cab you get in you show the address in Thai and they understand where to go if they cant understand your words. Maybe a newbie phrase bookwould be a good idea with phrases all in thai so the Newbie could just show the girl, taxi etc what he wants when conversation fails Phrases could include: Take me to Nana Plaza I want your friend to sleep with us tonight Do you swallow Just a thought

You can find most of those sentences and others in the BTF's Thai language section, but if you need to have the transcription with thai characters, I would recommend you to buy the following book: "Thai for Lovers - A Complete Guide to the Romantic Culture of Thailand" by Nit & Jack Ajee, Paiboon Publishing, ISBN 1-887521-04-6. You can easily find it in any Asia Books shop. The price should be around 299 Baht. Hope this helps... Cheers, French Goat

Not bad, but remember what works with hotels and places like Patpong and NEP won't always work with other addresses. If you give a driver a complete address with house number, soi number, etc., they often won't take you if they don't know precisely where it is--they'll lose face. It's OK if you give them an area and then directions, even hand signals, but give them something too precise up front and you can often be disappointed (and cab-less). And the problem with getting something written in Thai is the number of taxi drivers who can't read (especially at weekends when the cab renter sub-lets the cab to his--almost always a man, although I've experienced a couple of lady taxi drivers--country cousin). Not only can many not read, but if you try to show them a map you can spend all hours just trying to show them where you're starting from!

One more point that you might want to consider... I'd agree with the others about just saying the name of the place where you want to go. If you throw in extra words they won't understand you! Also, Thai's usually tend to pronounce words without any stress, so English names usually sound as though they have a false accent on the last syllable. If the taxi driver doesn't understand you at first, try saying your word with a slightly different vowel sound or intonation.
