Well, if you already know 2,000 words, you theoretically should not have problem understanding them. What you need to do is make direct associations to the Thai words, so that you don't have to translate them. Create a mental picture of that word, or any method that gives you a meaning to that spoken word. You should also learn to listen to them speaking at normal speed, you can't expect them to speak slowly all the time. Get used to it. For more practice, just listen to the newsreaders.

Dont try to figure out the whole sentence at once because then you get hung up on a few words and miss the rest. You may notice that you start to recognize more and more words in each sentence and if you have studied how a sentence is gramatically formed, it will get easier and easier. You probably know more than you think you do. Studying is good, practicing speaking it in real-time is the best. Spend a few hrs a day at the BeerGarden speaking with the girls, and if you fancy one of them, take her back and f*ck her silly (while practicing more of your Thai of course). I couldn't think of a better way to learn the language! 555

It sounds like you have learned all those Thai words from a book well, they don't sound the same sometimes, like you would expect an example I can think of is "Reu bPlow ?" It's used often at the end of a sentence to indicate a question like "Jing Reu pBlow ? " Really (True or Not) the Reu bPlow comes out sounding like Looplao I was stuck on the LOOP part and took me a week to figure out it was Reu pBlow they were saying best bet is to rent/buy a DVD/VCD that has Thai subtitles and listen to what they're saying and also reading the subtitles. At least then you can pause it and see what the heck is going on in each frame of text, and don't make it a dubbed to Thai movie, because the translaters who are recorded on the dub speak properly and enunciate well, unlike 90% of the Thai people that you hear on a regular Thai movie Don't make it a film of a classic period setting either as the words for me, you, them, etc. are different in that period, as well as some other words Try something like Sa-dTree Lake (Iron Ladies), it's newer and the voices will sound like everyday Thai another example I just thought of was Nah Gleeyat It's spelled Nah Gleeyut (Ugly Face), but when the locals pronounce it they leave off the L completely, Nah Geeyat When you pronounce it properly with the L, they understand, and some even mention that you must know how to read Thai as well, if you know there is supposed to be an L there If you're out with a gal or even just chatting with her, bring paper and a pencil. If you really can't understand, have her write it down. I learned that way for months

Not at all as easy as it sounds. Your 2,000 words etc. are undoubtedly "Central" Thai or Bangkok dialect. Bargirls come from all over Thailand and regional dialects will confuse you very quickly, even when just a few words are thrown into a sentence by the girls it will easily prevent you understanding even the gist of the conversation, let alone the nuances etc..

Listening to news readers is good and the same can be said for the Thai version of Sesame Street, kids TV programs. The adults speak slowly and use correct Thai and the vocabulary is at the right level for learning Thai.

What an excellent suggestion!! Do you also think she will correct you if miss anything essential in the pronounciation etc?! As it is very important with the pitch, many things might be said wrong at the end of a "hop"?!?! As I have now decided to try and get at least a grip of this difficult language, I have started to look for local courses - but no luch yet. There are also different CD thai courses available. Anyone tried those? I saw one I think was called "Rosetta Stone" or similar that claims to teach the way you once taught native tongue as a child. Could be good!! I mean - just listen to those young thai kids and how good they speak! Amazing!! 5555

Congrats to having learnt so many words! I think I can 50..... but it is a bit discouraging if you think that still with such a good vocabulary you feel you cant get along?! Makes the uphill ahead look even steeper......

oh, one more thing: talking to sweet bg's is fun. but if you learn your thai only with bgs, you will logically have the same vocabulary as they do. not always an advantage if you get into other parts of society. the other possibility is to tattoo "thai whore mongerer" on your forehead. some thais might not like it. just my 2 satangs le gringo loco
