I have always assumed that, when one finds a foreign word written in thai, and used as the common word for that subject, that thai didn't previously have a word for that object/concept.

Example: Beer = bia (r), where the R is written in the thai script, but with a special character that indicates it shouldn't be pronounced. Obviously an imported word, as why would they bother with the silent R otherwise? (that, and why would it be 'bia' of all things.)

My new favorite is:

gaan-kaw-rup-chun

Or, the work/matter/affair of corruption.

They've even been nice enough to put the "don't say this" marker over the first 'r' in corruption, using the second one for the 'rup' sound.

SO. Did the thais not have a word for corruption before the farang came along?

Ok, ok, so they've got a few more words for it.

Same dictionary can't find the word I'm talking about:

I found the word listed on page 14 of

the Thai word commonly used is toojerit

or too-ja-rit

you might hear it often in the coming week while the PM candidates are talking about how they are going to clean up the country

and the Gahn that precedes corruption just means the "doing of", like you said work/matter/affair of

Actually, this idea has been circulated for awhile in western circles, that Thai people didn't have a word for mafia or for corruption until zee Germans (or westerners) arrived.

Actually, the Thai equivalents have fallen by the wayside, and are used sometimes, whereas the tup sup words are used other times. In fact, the Thai words have evolved a bit in meaning.

God father; before the word nuk leng was used to denote mafia bosses...following the success of mafia films, the Thai direct translation of godfather, jao por, was picked up and is now used to denote various levels of senior mafia; even applied to quite legitimate business people as well; e.g. Khun Bhanya is jao por gameshow (another tup sup word).

Corruption: a variety of levels ranging from
kah num cha = pay someone to do something for you
dtai dtoh = under the table payment
dtit sinbon = ok, this is corruption: bribe
gohng bahn gohng muang = ok, this is also corruption; general corruption fun and games

But because of all the varieties, to make it easier, it is simpler to say corruption. There are quite a few more words, but my simple brain sticks to these ones, when paying people off.

The interesting thing, is that most people (myself included) see the first few tea money and such as perfectly ok, and I don't think it is any different to account management and incentives given to doctors for medicine etc. Equally non transparent. But some people really don't see it that way; especially certain countries. It definitely is a ethnicity and culture thing I think.

I really like this subject... if you want to talk more about how to get rich by doing nothing, then I can tell you about some of the great schemes running at the moment! At least what I know!
