Lets see whoreally knows their Thai-- I bought TGF a dictionary which does her not a bit of good as she cant read the english letters and know their sounds-
For some reason- every dictionary English/ Thai has the english word -the transliterated english word and the word written in thai- but there is no such thing as Thai/English with the transliteration of the english word in Thai
So I am making her a chart : for example:
"B" " b" --- as in BAD (8) BLA (fish) BAHN (house) she will then write the word in Thai and can study that
For Q, V, X, Z ---I COME UP WITH NOTHJING- if no word starts with these letters- is there any word where the sound is in the middle of a Thai word?? or does the sound not exist?
For "I" all I can find is IT-CHA (envious), IT (brick) and IM (full) can you do better? are these any good?
For "O" all I can find is OON (transfer money) and OO-LIAT (boast) can you do better or add a third?

8 Pbaat - has no direct English (or even Latin or Roman) character
Q is usually having a sound of K (quiet sounds like Kwaiet)
V - no character in Thai, even though they mistakenly use it for names like Vimol, but it really should be spelled Wimon IMHO
X & Z - 555, those are tough ones
can't think of any direct character association, most Thais can't pronounce a Z since it's not in their alphabet
most instances of X just sounds like CKS, like Styx

"local Y' - 8 pbaat- you lost me- what letter or sound is that?
the "Q" --- would kwaii (buffalo) have the right sound?
what about my picks for "I" and "o" ?? "X" and 'V' I guess are problem- thanks and regards

As with Sukhumvit.
sandontoes, I would write "8" as pairt (or bpairt to indicate an unaspirated 'p') sound. It does not really sound like a "B". For "B" words, you could use "Bar" for bar, "Biar" for beer, "Baah" (falling tone) for crazy, "Bai mai" for leaf, etc. And, the word for fish would be Plaa (or bplaa), it is not a "B" word.

c doesn't always have a CH sound, it could be Click or Clown
555, E is another, sometimes sEEn
G IMHO is Gor Gai in Thai, the first letter

can you think of any thai word starting with the double "e" sound- or the "i" sound in "like"(assume none of my three words do)

If "sink" is AHNG how does that give the "O" sound?????

Thanks to LY's knowledge you have probably realized by now that there are not phonetic equivalents in either language for each other, for some letters in either language.
c and k are the same sound in English (unless the c is playing s).
However in Thai there will be an aspirated k (kor kwai) and unaspirated (kor kai), and then some others (kor rakung, etc) aspirated as well and without much different except that they fit into the complex tonal consonant system. But it would be far too arbitrary to fix an English c or k on unaspirated or aspirated. Just tell her it's the same. It is.
Q --- kor kwai... yes... but the kor is followed by wor waen to make what we call q, and you can easily explain that is the sound. One for us, not too.
i believe there isn't technically an O sound in ahng, that's just for some reason the way most people pronounce it (a little bit like substituting the r for l, which is so popular). It's a vowel somewhat like the a in awesome or au in caught or ou in bought. British speakers, who have a weak r, transliterate it Or, thinking of words like "cord". So all the letters get "-or" for their names and for that little vowel. I'd use that word Ahng then for our English short o vowel and for our long o, I'd use Oleeung, the coffee drink she has bought in a bag on the road.
I applaud your efforts. Continue with it. Linguistics is fascinating.
Oops, your other question:
ee sound (as in eagle). Well there are many rude Isan words... There are others in your dictionary.
Long i. Well there are about 4 ways I can think of that will make this sound in English, and be acceptable to us as this sound, although in Thai they are 4 distinct sounds that their ears are trained to hear.
She will know what ice cream is.
Chai like a man.
ai like steam
ai like shy
Oh my goodness it goes on and on... You see they have a lot of distinct vowel characters that we don't have in our phonetic system at all. The consonants are easier. So just pick one. I guess that's what everybody's been doing, looking back at the thread. For long I, I like the sound in ice cream. She will know how to say and spell ice cream in Thai.
BTW agree with LY of course there is no V in Thai. When transliterating an English word such as Victory, the nearest is Wor waen or For fun. For fun is actually closer in some ways because of the position of the teeth. But neither one have the vibrato which is essential to the V. She needs teeth showing and through vibrating.
Also agreed on Gor Gai... it is G. Seeing K there I see red.
You will also have to teach her to not insert a vowel between consonant clusters like in "stick" saying "satick".
Actually there is a list of first language interference problems Thai speakers get when they learn English. You should look it up; it will help her pronunciation.
We could do the other vowels too... long and short... We'll have to think of the dipthongs too though in some cases.
