a question that has baffled me for a long time and i find the girls cannot explain either. how do they get their nicknames?. in england many names can be shortened and i see this sometimes in thai names. amuraiwan--am sara--sa but what about pachalat--sa prapaporn--nok[i know nok is thai for bird] saruta--bai pisada--bud any rhyme or reason how the names are chosen?.

Hi Nokna - Seems to me that TG's pick and choose their nicknames more or less at whim - and also change them once and awhile, just to confuse us poor farangs even more. Could be that the same "Na" you used to know could be called "Nok" now, and who but you would recognize them? I remember after a wild night in Pattaya waking up to a girl with the romantic name of "Poo". How nice. Of course, some of our names most likely sound strange to them too... cheers snowbird PS - must be a drag being home after your colourful adventures in Phuket- when's your next holiday?

As Thai names are long, when the kids are born the parents will give them a nickname depending on what they look like??? Daeng .. a very red baby Lek, a very small baby Kwat .. a baby shaped liked a bottle (my g/f's nickname, which she doesn't like so only uses with family) moo .. looks a bit like a pig (how nice) bpoo .. looks like a crap (sorry could not resist.. crab) noi .. also small Then there are the girls that pick their own .. if the name is like "Anny/Annie, Melanie, etc.. i.e. cutsy American type names then often a katoey" Others pick their nicknames based on personal preference ... Seldom is the nickname based on their regular name .. such as farangs often do where Richard becomes Mr. Dick, William becomes "slick Willie", Elizabeth becomes Betty/Liz and Monica just sucks

a lot of them had trouble pronouncing my name and i had a few variations of it. one girl i know has a lovely real name and i loved saying it. prapaporn mornapai. it really rolls of the tongue. the same girl had a son called vittawat, known as wat.when i said to her 'ah,wat, thai for temple' and she replied 'that's why i name my son wat,i worship in wat and i worship my son' i thought that was a sweet reason.

noi vs noy - different intonation? if you're familiar with the 5 tonal inflections of thai, it's the 2nd and 4th one. i hope i got that right...it has been too long anyhoo, both of the names share pretty much the same meaning - small, little, etc. (usually quantitative) - and often used together, as in "noy noi" (which roughly translates to "less")

i only ask because of my friendship with a girl called Noy. i had her name tattooed on my arm,but had the Noi version done,as that was how i thought her name was spelt. she was a little disappointed when she saw it was the wrong one.

Besides the obvious stuff on the names, like "Lek" = small, there are some less obvious things. I knew a guy named Lek, thought it an odd name. Learned that his parents called him that so he would grow up big. Sort of a reverse psychology. Other names can be just names that are considered cute or sweet. Sort of like American fathers referring to their daughters as "muffin" or "pumpkin". Also, per my frau, who is Thai, they often don't bother to give a formal name or register the birth until later. Thais have a lot of superstitions and one of them is around naming their kids. The formal name might not come along until many years later, and there is a whole set of rules around what names are good luck based on the date and time of birth. From what I gather a lot of this has to do with the position of the vowels (above the line, below the line, to the left or right of the consonant, no vowels at all, etc). Then there is the thing where they use different names for different environments. Like a name for work, a name for home, a name for friends, etc. I've also know people to totally change their names on the advice of a fortune teller. Which is tough on me since I'm horrible with names to start.

- correct seubeu, having 2 or 3 Nicknames quite common, especially amongst BGs, whilst the arrival of a new pop star on the scene seems to also spawn plenty of "Yu'ees, Pookies, etc ... but I guess my vote goes to a cutie who used to frequent the nana discoe, and was also partial to a drink ... her actual name was "Pia" - but she changed it slightly to "Beer" when approached, as she often was, by a farang - result being, when the asked her her name, - they would usually say, "oh - you want a beer " - she would always say OK, - suffice to say she had no trouble getting pissed most nights !

TPE - Thats a good one! Bia, that's up there (I met a "Bia" at AngelWitch, she was 18 with a rock hard body). The coolest nickname I have come across so far is "Martini", I had to chuckle at that one! A few other cool ones I have met are "Gift", "A", and "Win".
