I went to the AUA and did the one hour sitting in on a lesson on my last visit to Bangkok. I like the idea of sitting there being entertained by people speaking Thai, but I'm not sold on the entire idea, as I'm not sure how it works, if it works.
What I am asking has anyone taken the course in Bangkok and if so could you elaborate on it a bit?
Thanks, and I am asking specifically for the Bangkok course as the ones in other cities seem to be using a different method.

Like most practices in Thai education, this method is considered by modern foreign language pedagogists as woefully outdated.
Adults learning a foreign language are not children learning a native language, and as such do not "soak up language" simply by being exposed to it.
If you want to learn a new language, you need practice--lots of it--speaking it yourself, in contexts/situations that have *meaning* to you, situations in which you have some sort of vested interest in accomplishing communication to realize some goal or purpose, however modest.

What course are you talking about ?
Learning Thai ?
Learning for a TESOL certificate for teaching?
Learning English for a Thai ?
I took the TESOL course at AUA for teaching English and it was NOT worth the 60,000 baht I paid. I would have been better off finding experienced teachers to tutor me on what teaching is like in Thailand.

I tried it a few years ago. I sat there for several weeks and watched their little skits, kind of funny. I thought I was learning. One day I decided to close my eyes and see if I understood anything thing. I didn't. I realized I was relying on their visual clues for my understanding. I changed to Unity Thai school in the Times Square Building. Learned more there in a week than I did at AUA in the 5 or 6 weeks I tried it. Maybe it works for some people, but not for me. Also, you don't get any practice speaking Thai there. You just listen to it being spoken and if you are asked a question they want a response in English. They have a fit if you take notes or uses a Thai-English dictionary.
However, there are lots of cute Thai Girls there studying English.
