I used a school paid for by my company. I have no idea whether it was good or bad. Seemed okay, my teacher worked as a speech pathologist at one of the hospitals during the day and earned extra money on nights or weekends teaching Thai.
I would recommend that you practice as much as possible. If you are inclined to find a girlfriend they can be amongst the best teachers.

Girlfriends typically make rotten teachers, IMO. They are good for practice, but a real teacher is definitely recommended.

You are 100% correct, your GF does not want you to understand Thai.
The girls are compulsive "gossipers" and cannot keep a secret from each other and love telling each other how they have lied (sometimes only a little bit to the BF's, husbands, customers etc) or cheated.
Personal experience my wife and her girlfriend chat about girlfriend's boss allows her to take car, on weekends, to see her sister. The girls joke that "sister has cock", unknown to the employer the "sister" is really the girls husband, all this is possible because he does not understand Thai.
