My Thai-English dictionary spells it as: phee seua where the first word has a rising tone and the second a falling tone. You pronounce the first word somewhat like the English word pea, and the second word sort of like sue-uh, maybe almost as if you are swallowing the word.

Which language dialect is that Chompoo? Or is it just a less literal translation?

Old joke: Q: Why did the moron throw the butter out the window? A: Because he wanted to see a "neuay-bin"... Typical literal translation attempt: neuay = butter, bin = fly. But I suspect Chompoo knows this, and is having you on a bit... hs waiting for the 100 line retort...

Clever, I'd have never got that. I'm sure it loses any vague humor it had once translated. I wasn't even aware there was a Thai word for butter. I would have guessed just a Thai pronounciation of an English word.

seubeu, I remember being surprised that Thais eat dairy products at all. My ex-TGF LOVED 'nom priaw' (literally 'sour milk'), which is actually a liquid yogurt-like drink, and quite good. Lots of it at 7-11...and I see little ladies on bicycles selling it from styrofoam coolers all the time. Actually there is a fairly big dairy industry in Thailand... http://www.thaidairy.co.th/ haam sup

seubeu, I only bothered making my joke because I thought your response was probably equally correct, but also just as useless. I assume he was looking for something more like "jao choo", but I could be mistaken.

@haam sup: yeah, the wife is quite lactose intolerant but still likes yoghurt and some other things, like ice cream. Thais certainly like their ice cream. I just can't think of anything, off the top of my head, that requires butter in it. Maybe as a lubricant? @Chompoo: I recalled there being some Thai term that was equivalent, but maybe not a direct translation of butterfly. But Nana Hunter did ask for a transliteration of Butterfly. He got what he asked for, more than once here. All equal parts useless. What does "jao choo" translate to, literally?

What does "jao choo" translate to, literally?
I don't know. Okay, I just looked it up and one literal translation would be "Lord Adulterer".
