Just needed some input about learning Thai. I've noticed from many of the posts that learning Thai is pretty essential if a person wants to stay in Thailand. I know most Thais speak a little English but I agree with the notion that a person would be better of learning Thai if contemplating staying in Thailand or visiting it frequently. The trouble is I'm the sort who is linguistically challenged and I can't seem to keep whatever I learn in my head...probably due to the fact that I don't get to practice Thai often enough. The books I have bought show how to pronounce the words but they tend to come out wrong 90% of the time. I was wondering if you guys(who can speak thai) have come across a self learning tool that I could purchase. I will be in BKK soon but don't know where to start looking. Appreciate any of your suggestions.

Yurune, I'm from Singapore. They do have some courses which are taught my Thai native speakers...which I have considered. What I'm lookig at is probably purchasing some books that come with tapes so I can learn the proper pronunciation..instead of looking an idiot whenever I speak Thai. Any suggestions or do you know any place in Thailand where I can buy any of these stuff.

BK, Thanks for the recommendation. This was one of the books with tapes, I was orginally considering. The website you provided lists the price at around US$20. However I came across a Thai website: http://www.dco.co.th/books/thaiforbeginners.htm which offers the same book you recommended for around US$15 and since I'm coming to BKK on 30th I'll get them to send it to me. Do you have the Intermediate and Advanced editions as well BK?

HUNTED, If you are coming over here, you can find that book and the rest of the books by the same author in Asia Books or Bookazine. For the intermediate book, just get the book, don't see the point in the tapes. For the advanced one, get the tape so that you follow the author reading the longer text. All are available in the abovementioned bookshops.

One of the things about learning a foreign language is that at the beginning you are going to sound like a beginner. If you worry to much about how people will percieve your language skill that makes it harder to advance. That's one reason (among many) that kids learn language faster than adults. No fear of falling down. In this regard I'd recommend a couple of drinks to loosen you up before you venture out to speak Thai with a nice, long-haired dictionary.
