I am a Singaporean working and living in Singapore. Being a greedy sort of fellow, it’s been my maxim to avoid having to choose when I can have it all. Singapore is a good place to work because of the comparatively high salaries. When I need to stretch my legs I throw a few things in the car and within 30 minutes it’s the open road in Malaysia enjoying the food, hospitality and excellent “value for money” recreational facilities found there. When I need to misbehave, (and who doesn’t?), it’s only a 20 minute train ride from my house to Changi airport and a 2 hour flight to Bangkok. So for me, it’s been Singapore for the high salary, Malaysia for the open spaces and Thailand for the nightlife and beautiful women. My Singapore and Malaysian activities are sustainable. However, I realize that I needed to do more that just the bars and bar girls in Thailand. So I took up the advice found in numerous websites to learn conversational Thai. Get to know some “real” Thai women as Stickman likes to put it. Before my last trip, I made some enquiries on soc.culture.thailand. I wanted private tuition in conversational Thai at my hotel swimming pool for 2 hours a day for 2 weeks. I did get a response but I didn’t want to pay Bh800 an hour that was quoted. So when I arrive in Bangkok, I asked around in the bars and was lucky to meet Cib. She was a teacher before and she agreed to tutor me for Bh250 an hour 2 hours a day for 2 weeks at my hotel swimming pool. She will provide the learning material. It worked out very well. Cib was punctual, had good pronunciation (very important when learning Thai) and had a lesson plan. I paid her Bh500 daily after the lesson. After 10 days we had a field trip. We “pai see khong” (go shopping). I spoke Thai with Cib close by to help me when I was stumped. The reaction I got from the sales girls motivated me to learn more. They were so charming and helpful reminding each other to “poot cha cha noi, kap khun kaa” (speak slowly for my benefit thank you). I offered to set up a web page for Cib in exchange for additional lessons during my next visit to Bangkok. The web site is http://ratanadewi.jeeran.com. if anyone wants to learn Thai. jeff

Jeff, this is an interesting concept, and seems a nice deal you've worked out in trade. What area is Cib from? Also, welcome to the Forum! You might have posted this under "Phrases/Language" instead of here. That's the area for language questions and more likely someone interested in learning Thai would find it there.
