Hi

I have just returned from a 1˝ months vacation in Thailand (my first time) and ofcause I want to go back for more!

Right now I am tumbling around with some ideas about going back for a year. But I have to do something when I'm there and I think my choises are either to find some kind of work (please no comments on how hard this is going to be) or to study their language.

If I study ˝-1 year I would like to end up with some kind of exam so I have something to show if I should choose to seek employment in Thailand at some point in my future after I have finished my economics study in Denmark!

My question is: Does anybody have some information regarding studying Thai as professionally as possible. I mean; to devote oneself every day learning as much as possible and in the end besides hopefully being able to read and write Thai (more or less) also have something of "business value" (like a very small degree, lol).

NB: Even though I'm "only" 24 years old I don't want any of those educationary programs where you live with a local family and such.

Hope you can help!

Suggest you read some of the previous threads in this topic, where thoughtful and detailed answers (mine ), have already been given.

The short answer is: Union Language School on Surawong, 20 hrs/wk, about 5-6000 baht per month long course.

As for a mini-degree, the standard of proficiency is the sixth-grade (Prathom 6) test, and Union WILL prepare you for that test.  I think it will take less than a year, although I know people who have completed 6 months at Union, and passed the test.  A nice certificate is awarded.

hope this helps,

Turist and HS,

Just a few days ago, I was quoted a price of 6,100 baht for the 80 hour/month course.  Turist, Union probably has the best reputation among the thai language schools.  You can also check out Nisa (I think it is a Union spin-off) and Siri Pattana.

Turist, would highly recommend Somchart Language School, Sukhumvit soi 19. I recently finished a block of 20 hours there (private 1-on-1 tuition). Excellent place. They have a (sort of) website:
http://www.geocities.com/thai_language_school/

For reviews of some Thai-language schools in BKK, see:

(& scroll down to just over half-way down the page).

nikko,

Did they give you any idae as to how long to prepare for the P.6 exam?  As I recall, they had a 6 month course, and some extra classes you were supposed to take after that...

6100/80 hrs. sounds about the same as I remembered, but someone recently said 5000...I'm glad to have the REAL number, as it's part of my newly-formed budget...

I still have some hours paid for at AUA, so I guess I'll use those on the way home from Union...

thanks,
haam sup

HS,

It was me that said 5,000 in another thread.  And that is what is was last August.  I was at the school and had the paperwork (unless the price on there was stale--- I wish I could find it now it had a lot of info).  Besides price, I did have a bunch of other questions such as price for private lessons, p6 info., but the tg who answered the phone did not speak English well and it was a struggle just to get the price. After that I think we mutually mai pen rai'd and I hung up.  I plan to either call back another time or have a tg call for me to get the additional info.  If I find out I will let you know.  But one thing to note, if I remember correctly they only offer 9 mos. of coursework so can't exceed that timeframe.

I got info on preparing for pathom 6 from one of the Union spin-off schools.  Basically-- study for 6 months and then test to be admitted into the "Pathom 6 Module" class.  This apparently lasts for 2-3 months.
