Hi Guys
My GF insists that I am called Andrew and not my preferred "Andy". She says that Andy means something "very bad" in Thai but won't (or can't) explain it to me.
Can anyone help me understand this?

there's no negative connotation as far as I know. In fact, I know 100% Thai people named Andy and Andrew.

As PR says there are even Thais with the name and I have friends with that name that live here  and get no negative reaction.
The only thing that comes to mind is the way Thais will typically stress the latter syllable (An-DEE). Could it have something to do with sounding like 2 Thai words?

When pronounced in a typical Thai way "Andy" will come out as two words - "An Dee", not "Andi".
"An" is a general classifier in Thai - for example if you want to buy two of something and don't know the correct Classifier you can say "Kor Song An" and it will be understood.
However "An" is also fairly low class Thai - or slang - for "Penis" (In some "Jungle Food" restaraunts you can order a dish called "Tua Diew An Diew" - "only one part in each (animal) body" i.e. the animals' penis cooked in various ways.)
Therefore if one really looks to make the name "Andy" sound crude in Thai it could be heard as "Good penis". Most middle class or higher Thais would not make the connotation, however it would certainly get a laugh from the more earthy bargirl community.

Whitespider, to me that doesnt sound like a bad name at all. I think your girl may just be a bit the jealous kind and she doesnt like the idea of you going around advertising yourself by saying you are "good penis"
