What are the 5 Precepts?

The moral code within Buddhism is the precepts, of which the main five are: not to take the life of anything living, not to take anything not freely given, to abstain from sexual misconduct and sensual overindulgence, to refrain from untrue speech, and to avoid intoxication, that is, losing mindfulness.

so far for the intro ... is there a word for the five precepts in general in thai and what is the word for intoxication (i know mau means drunk) or "losing mindfulness" ?

Phew !! As you know bg's and their johns live away from that shadow. BG's ask for safety and protection if they can't find a good hearted man. Johns ask for a wayward kinky wench that can handle anything.
Kinda misleading Buddhism really; needs and wants should be lessened through lifes journeys.
Materialism is big time everywhere and I want my hareem to see round the world too.

Bhuddism is like baseball. If you can manage to bat .300, you are doing great.

Not the smartest of comparisons. Remember guys, previous discussions of religion matters in this forum have often ended in the need for the use of the laser mouse to delete things that started to veer towards disrespect to one or more religions.

This topic is in the language section. It's not intended to start a discussion about religions, so please do that elsewhere. I just asked for some help on translating something. Anybody?

MrJoe
The 5 are for everyone. There are 8 for those who wish to be pious and 227 for monks.

In Pali (the language of Buddhist scholarship), the word for the five precepts is "pañca-sila."

I can't think of a specific Thai word for the precepts and I'm not sure there is one, but the word for the Buddha's teachings is:

"dharma" (Tam'má) - ธรรม

Right mindfulness is "samma-sati" or "sati". To lose it would be "sia samma-sati" -- I think. But the word that is used in the 5th precept is usually translated from Pali as "carelessness". I can't remember the word and I haven't got a book handy.

Hopefully I can answer the original query:

religious precept or commandment = sin (sor saa-laa, sara ii, lor ling)
five precepts = sin-har
eight precepts = sin-bairt
ten commandments = sin-sip

'sin' is also used to form the word for Holy Communion - sin-larng-barp
