Has anyone been robbed by an ATM in BKK? I have been robbed twice by an ATM!!!! Both instances involved me wrawing some money from an ATM. The money came out, along with a receipt, but then another receipt came out 5 seconds later and said that I wrew another 30000B and no money came out! I checked my bank statement and it said that I did indeed wraw this 30000B. Has anyone ever experienced anything similar? I will be travelling to BKK this November, and learning from this previous experience, I will be bringing ONLY traveller cheques and cash. Is this a wise idea? I don't want to get robbed using my credit card or bank card anymore!

Nope. Had my first bank account her in 1990. I have used ATM's from abroad (it's how I receive any money sent to me, get them to pay into UK account and withdraw here.) and I have 3 ATM's here at the moment. Never a problem.

Kenny, I'd like to know what kind of ATM you were using. Was it at a bank , at a store, or just a stand alone kiosk? Just so I know which ones to steer clear of...

Kenny, I have had one experience at the Standard Chartered ATM machine. I made a withdrawal of 5,000B. A system error occured and no money came out. When I checked my balance, 5,000 B was deducted. I was going to make report about this, but didn't have the time. Interestingly, at the end of the month, that amount was credited back to my account.

No problem whatsoever using ATMs. They are almost everywhere and I prefer to use the ones at the BTS Skytrain stations or the ones located at the malls. Barely a week ago I lost my ATM card and I guess I forgot that one in the machine or someone took it out quite fast afyer my transaction (a withdraw B/.20.000). By the time I realized the problem the card was not with me nor in the ATM and I called the 24-hrs hotline to cancel it. There were no problems. They did it very fast. Not a cent was missing!!

Took me a while to work out that ATM is not an abbreviation for "Attractive Thai Maiden" or "Attractive Thai Molester" or " Attractive Thai Male". I think the referrence to Card, gave me the Clue!!!!!!!!

Normally banks provide some kind of insurance for that. You notify them asap and you get the money back into your account. I guess banks can normally trace such problems (every malfunction recorded in the ATM). Anyway you should always report such problem or do it the French way: complain complain complain.

I withdrew 20000 baht once and it only gave me 19 1000 baht notes didn't check my statement but figured it wasn't worth 1000 baht to run interference between my western bank and the Thai bank that owned the ATM It might have been the last of the 1000's and the machine wasn't smart enough to give me two 500's

Have had an ATM from one of the non-Thai banks here for 14 years, never a problem. Only disadvantage of it being non-Thai is, it doesn't work on weekends or bank holidays.

Try using your Thai ATM on the last Friday of the month a number of Thai banks block the use by other Banks customers, really pisses me off.
