i am putting together a business plan to go on a buying trip to thailand to spend about 8k on clothing in thailand and then bring the items back to the states
do i try and bring everything back on the airplane?
do i ship (it would need to be air) back to the states?
does anyone understand customs and could give advice on declarations
u.s. cotton regulations?

does your business scale in magnitude?
i.e. is money your only limitation? do you have a market in the US for more than 8k worth of product but you are limited by your financing?
f_ck it - is anyone out there involved in a market where there is more demand than you can satisfy because you don't have the cash for inventory etc?

Regarding customs duties , shipping rates , etc. - you have already received suffecient offers of information .
However before you even venture forth I need to caution you on one very important aspect . All Textiles ( including Garments ) exported from Thailand to the U.S. , Canada , U.K. & E.U. are covered by Quotas and ONLY AN EXPORTER WHO HAS A VALID QUOTA for the particular category of goods is allowed to export those goods . So please make sure that whoever is selling you the goods gives you a valid quota certificate .

Not all garments require a quota, most freight forwarders can tell you what does not one.

You specifically mentioned "Cotton" goods , in which case I strongly recommend that you check out the quota regulations .
I am sure that the U.S. Customs Dept. has a Web-Site ( their Thai counterpart has a pretty informative one ) where you can check the Harmonic Code , the Quota Category & the Import Duty Rates for the items you wish to Import into the U.S.
I do not know what their URL is - but I am sure that if you do a Google Search for " U.S. Customs " or "U.S. Imports " you will find it .

Just spent a few hours last month looking into the same general area, and Arramsey has it cold: textiles and clothing are QUOTA items, and receive special (not favorable to the little guy) treatment under US Customs law. I guess this doesn't apply to 'Soiled Panties', eh, ccvvbb?
Smegma might say that you are not off to much of a start if you are asking these questions here...

BTW, generally, you present a COMPLETED business plan to your source of financing. Must have been embarassing to have a BANK weenie know that yours wouldn't fly. Did you tell him/her you were waiting for 'research' from BKKTonight?
