This what I do to prevent getting ripped in LOS (land of scams). I call my credit card, atm company before I leave and let them know when I arrive and leave LOS and not to accept any charges from countries other then Thailand. I make copies of my passport. I don't carry the original. I leave that in the in room safe. If you get stopped by the cops the copy is ok as they will take you back to the hotel if they need to see your passport. I make copies of my credit card, atm numbers along with the phone number they provide for any problems. I don't carry my atm, credit card when I go out at night. I carry 5k that's more then enough. I like to keep 5-10k cash back at the hotel in case I have problems with the atm being down. I carry a couple of hundred in American Express Travelers Checks that I keep for emergency use only. If you do have problems AMEX is excellent and they do have offices in Thailand. Make sure you keep your receipt. Pick up a business card with the hotels name on it in Thai. Late at night you can show this to the cab driver. Whenever possible, I stay at a hotel with in room safe. I like 24 hour access to my money. I always make the girl check in with security as SHE knows they have a record of who she is.

My personal security issues... I always carry 2 credit cards with me, I always carry up to 10k in cash, I always take out at least 25k in cash from an ATM at any time of the day or night and count it on the side of the road, I never carry my passport or a copy, I do carry my licence and use that for ID, I never call my credit card company they can get f_cked the rude pricks, I call my c/c company regularly to abuse them for not authorising a strange transaction like a recent strip club, I never make copies of my cards for someone to steal instead if I lose them I am f_cked. Worked for me so far, I also make a habit lately of getting into strange peoples cars.

I take far less security precautions than I do in the UK. I leave my passport and Work Permit in my desk at work...unlocked I carrry a full wallet including all credit cards, UK ATM, 2 Thai ATM's and rarely less that 5000B in cash (at the start of an evening) I fall asleep drunk in taxi's regularly going home. I use my credit cards regularly and never check the bills, they are just paid in the UK and I only see the paperwork when I visit. I've never had a problem. I would however take BigD's advice over mine, but I have been robbed once....in California.

My security issues: I make sure the cellular is turned off when a local beauty has ended up in my room. If wife calls it may cause concern if the local cutie suddenly calls from the shower! I hide the money under my balls so if they want to rob me at least I have some fun in the process!

i have been travelling around the world for a year now. my safety precautions: my passport always stays in the hotel room. i always carry a copy. if the police would stop me and wanted to see the genuine document, i would never get into a car with them, but walk to my hotel. i would never let them enter my room. (more a concern for latin america than los). i have a creditcard and a maestro card, which i only use to get cash at atms. i only use them at other places in case of an emergency. i have copies of my passport and my airline ticket and other documents with me, and one set is back home with a friend, as a last backup. during my whole travelling , nothing has happened. of course i got "robbed" by girls all the time, but that was well intended. btw, ever been caracas? it is hard to find a ugly girl here... el gringo loco

Great tips from BigDUSA. I usually bring 2 credits cards to LOS, and keep one in the safe and one in my wallet.

Quote: from Yurune on 1:05 pm on Sep. 17, 2003 Don't forget to pack the paranoia....
Early saturday morning my daughter wakes me up, Dad the credit card company is on the phone they told me you charged 12KUSD jewelry in China. I told them that doesn't sound like my Dad. At the sound of 12K, I'm wide awake and take the phone from her. Someone had cloned my card and charged alot of stuff on my card after I had arrived home. I didn't have to pay for it. Paranoia , naw.

Good advice from BigDUSA. ŬI do most of the same things and have so far never had a problem anywhere. "I carry 5k that's more then enough." More than enough? ŬI usually carry twice that and it is often not enough. "I make copies of my credit card, atm numbers along with the phone number they provide for any problems." The phone numbers are key here. ŬI don't make copies of the cards but I do write down the international customer service numbers for each card I travel with. Another good idea, especially if you have good internet access from your room, is to occassionally monitor your credit cards on line if you have used them on your trip. ŬThis way you will know within a day or so if anything unauthorized is on one of your cards. ŬI actually am in a habit of looking at my bank accounts and all credit lines online each day anway so it is just routine for me. "I carry a couple of hundred in American Express Travelers Checks..." Amex TC's are good indeed. ŬI usually divide the money I am travelling with between cash (crisp new bills) and TC's in $100 denominations. I would add one. ŬTry always to have a good relationship with the hotel or serviced apartment staff and security. ŬThat could mean a little extra tip for the security gaurds, some candy for the front desk girls, a meeting with one of the managers (an excuse to do this could be to negotiate a future corporate rate for your company or to view some of the other rooms), and finally always treat the cleaning staff well and tip them reasonably well. I have received so many benefits by being friendly with hotel and serviced apartment staff. Ŭ HD
