I have been following the exchange rates and I see how the Baht has not crossed 40 in sometime. I am hoping that with the new jobs number we will start to see the Dollar rise. What do you guys think is the chance of it going to 45-1 dollar over the next 6 months? What was the highest you guys saw when you were there, and how much did it affect your buying power? Lets all root for the dollar.

45 baht to the dollar seems unlikely anytime soon. In the last few years it has been about 42, but not often at 45. Most Asian currencies are artificially undervalued against the dollar because these countries want to encourage exports and discourage imports. The US economy can no longer sustain such policies and the unofficial US policy will be to keep the dollar at its present value or slightly lower for the foreseeable future.

But we would not all root for the dollar.....some of us get much better deals when the dollar is low...so lets root for it to stay low.... No offence meant....

Shallowguy lives up to his name.........some of us do care about the dollar. Especially when it used to be over 50. Unfortunately, I believe the dollar will be weaker against most currencies for quite some time. I would be happy with a 40 to 1 and even that may be a stretch. Best I got last month was just over 39. I expect that to be the going rate or just below that for the near future. I am not a economist but that is my best guess.

Barring an international event, I'd be really suprised if the 40 level was even retested before the third or fourth quarter of 2004.

When I was in bkk the first time, last April, the exchange rate was 42... By the time I left, 10 days later, it was down to 40. Since then, I have seen it gradually decline - and with the current politics of the US, I do not see this getting any better. Now, if you're talking Euro / €, then we're talking a far stronger and better exchange rate - my relatives in Europe right now would have far better buying power for the same amount of currency, than I would. Then again, all things considered, we're not talking about a fortune of a difference.

Since you guys have been there you probably have a better feel for it than I do. From a finance perspective though, as the US economy continues to rise and it looks like interest rates will rise, the dollar rises. Today the dollar had a healthy increase against the Euro. Anyway, I forgot this was an international board, so how about we all root for our currencies to go up and the Baht to get hammered!
