Hi, I was wondering if anyone new if it was possible for a foreigner (English) to open a bank account in Thailand ? I have been asking questions on this forum about buying property in Thailand, and think it might be a good idea to open a bank account when I arrive next week. I visit Thailand 2 or 3 times a year on holiday, I do not live or work there. Many thanks...

I used to be able to open a new account with nothing more than my passport, but these days they expect to see a Work Permit also. Without a Work Permit, you're just "passin' thru" to them.

You could try Citibank, which allows accounts in US Dollars or Thai Baht. Not sure if that will make it easier, but it might worth a try if you are having problems elsewhere. I assume you are interested in buying a condo. Buying land is next to impossible for foregners.

Indeed, it's very hard to get a Thai account without a work permit nowadays. If you have an account, hold on to it.... ------------------------------------------------------------------- Buying land is next to impossible for foregners. ------------------------------------------------------------------- There are several ways to buy land.... a little complicated but certainly not next to impossible. Ask a good lawyer.

One way is to get the local branch of your overseas bank to open one for you. HSBC arises to mind. However they charge 500Baht/mth if you have less than a stupid amount in there. I only ever have 50k or 60k in there so I pay the charges. I know one farang recently, a vacationer, who opened a joint account with his Thai wife. No problem.

agreed, I have had good experience with HSBC, but they do charge for EVERY service... Standard Chartered on the other hand was a fvcking joke. They suggested I go to the UK to open a freakin' account...

Y'all wont be as stupid as me (probably wont!) but I used to have two accounts (Thai Farmers/Kasikorn Thai and Bangkok Metropolitan Bank) but after I left LOS I didn't access the accounts for 6 months (ish) and when I returned to Bkk the ATM cards didn't work. I had left only about Baht 200 or so in each but I wanted to deposit more in TFB but the assistant told me that I would have to open a new account then she cut the old card in half! She told me that since August 2003 all foreigners needed to have a work permit to open a personal account! Moral, if you have an account don't let it lapse too long! Cheers

Try the Bangkok Bank on Sukhumvit Rd, sorry don't remember what soi, but between soi 4 and Times Sq. I was advised to use this one myself by an English guy who owns one of the bars in NEP. I managed to open an account there and gave my hotel room as my address (the bank assistant told me to do this). Account has run smoothly with no problems at all, money goes in every month without problem. Having said this, it looks as if you may need a work permit now judging by the other guys posts, but it is worth a try. BS

if you've less than 500b (1k for some banks) in your account and a full year lapses, they will charge you an admin fee... balance = less than 0 = account closed. I've had only one account closed this way, but yes, if you have an existing account, I would suggest keeping at least 1k Baht in there, and also do A transaction every six months.

you can open an account no problem with your passport only. I work overseas and have 2 accounts using my passport only; I even opened one for my mother when she was here on holidays. It takes about 2 weeks to get an international ATM card (electron visa), you can get a local one when you open your account. with your pass book you can pay money into your account from overseas a lot more easily than normal wire transfers............
