Yesterday morning two policemen on motorbike came to visit our office.
I only heard their 2-way radio blaring out instructions from in the other room.
They were a little surprised to see that there was a Falahng running this office, and were even more shocked when I could hold a conversation with them in their own language, without any real effort...
I should have said Que Pasa ?

Plenty of small talk and the like. One of them is a young lad in a crisp & pristine new uniform, while the other is older with a sh!tty brown faded uniform.
Typical Rookie/Old hand partner team-up.
I'm guessing there's something amiss at first. Did I run down too many motorbikes going the wrong way on Suk. Road last night ??
and by that I mean the motorbikes going the wrong way, which appears to be the norm where I live.
Then I remember that my party area is not the same district.
Make a subtle reference or two that I'm friends with the military. Everyone knows the police are reverent of the military in LOS, especially in the area where I live though.
Plenty of dead air, which I manage to fill by bringing up new topics, as one does.
Show them around the office to break up the dead air, and they finally get me completely alone and not within earshot of the co-workers.
The older fellow asks if we wouldn't be willing to contribute to setting up a security check-point.. The cost would be X,000 Baht/month and they would install a red box at the back of our building.
When checking the status of our office, they would sign in and also write in the time.
Well, I pass them over to our diligent secretary at this point and after a little deliberation they say it could be X,500 Baht per month, whatever were willing to give etc.
They are feeling very uncomfortable now as they are finishing their coffees and water in my office. I ignore this whole money issue as if it doesn't concern me. Still just small talk for me.
Getting more uncomfortable now, and they say they'll come back for an answer tomorrow, which is Saturday.
Well, I told them that Saturday is not normally a work day for us, and if they do come back it's best they contact the secretary as I'm likely to be out and about...
Plenty of chit-chat about what just went on, by the staff, after the policemen had gone.
Said they'd never seen anything so Nah Dahn

Well, I explained to them that if it had been done in the Philippines, they would have been carrying their revolvers in a threatening manner during the whole escapade. 555
We'll surely advise that they go to the owner of the building with this request next time round, as we pay rent already which is supposed to include security for our wares. Yes, we checked the agreement after the boys-in-brown left...

well, that is certainly more reasonable.
sounds like the estate owner is paying the coppers, but collecting the fee individually from the residents.
this would work much better where we are too, instead of individually charging each building...

This is a valuable service and should not be sniffed at.
On Sukhumvit in Thonglor police area they charge about 2,500 / mth (or is it 3,500? my memory is becoming like a sieve)
Now where was I????? Oh yes, red boxes.
My dear lady sufferred a burglary at her premises and promptly installed state of the art alarms, grilles over every possible orifice (of the building) and hired a guard. Not content with this she begged the police for some assistance.
Being the well known lady that she is and to ensure she did not bring war weapons again into central Bangkok to arm her private army (long story) they offerred her the red box.
They tie it on the front of the premises and come by every two hours at night. they initial the book inside so you can check they have been. Anything suspicious and they phone in.
In addition the business liasion officer calls by most days to check everything is OK ("the hadsum guy" is his nickname, bugger has a girlfriend in every shop)
Apart from the supply of doughnuts to passing officers (thai cops love them too) the fee was the only payment needed. Once she felt secure and the police had made some arrests she stopped.
"Handsum guy" still calls by to reassure her most days and eat her doughnuts but there has never been any other demand for money.
This is not really a shake down. A shake down is when you get nothing in return.
However the cops are broke and need to supplement the 4,000 Baht salaries that junior officers get. This is an "honest" service. Well, about as honest as the boys in brown can manage.

My lady does not as she is small fry.
If you want your business to get some priority, such as assistance with getting out of the car park at 5 pm, you may sponsor a police box.
If you want to butter up the local cops further you may provide them with waterproof gear etc. This can be purchased in many shops in bangkok. As policemen have to buy their own uniforms this is most welcome.
However it is not really extortion, you do these things in order to butter them up, not to avoid being persecuted.
For instance what would you do if you found the local travel agent was hanging on to your refund money and pissing you about in the hope you will just go away? Suing in the court may take 3 years+ and it is a civil matter.
Just phone your local cop, sitting at his desk wearing a uniform you gave him and sipping a glass of whisky you bought him.

i'm with bkk banger when I was in udon I met a undercover cop with the yaa bah team every day he was pissed don't really know why he liked me, maybe can speak thai but he would arrest the kids take the yah baa and then sell it one night we were on ecstasy and after clubbing went to eat saw the local boys in brown before taksin they would join you and drink your wiskey of course but now not, anyway one fine day in the local disco lights up one sh_t decides to take the piss out of me with you fallangs are all big headed and only come here to have sex (the truth) hated yanks going on about 40 baht to the dollar must of been gone I don't look like a yank or speak, however I retorted in thai with yes you have money but why are you a sh_t with it all night he had been treating the waiters/waitresses like sh_t and is well known for it the guy with him maybe out to protect him I don't know came over to my table threataning he would shoot me I replied you do what you like but you've only got one chance then i'll kick your sorry arse back to bkk.i was drunk as well but not really scared. while all this was happening my gf phoned the yah baa copper which I didn't know, everyone knew him he arrived, spoke to big sh_t and then the big sh_t comes over to my table and shakes my hand and starts hugging me now if you know thai's never let your guard down with someone you've just had a problem with but this was not normal yah baa cop asks if we all want to go to the other disco which is still open, I agreed the disco I find out belongs to big sh_t and there is only us there, it turns out big sh_t lost his gf to a fallang so now hates all of us but as the night went on had a change of heart and realised I was with my gf a long time and that some of us are actually ok. I still see big sh_t now and again got a used car lot now. just by knowing the right copper can help a great deal, but not all. you want a good life in los grease the wheels and they turn don't think is not right and take the moral high ground you will fall and hard.

sorry ly forgot to add in your position if the block is paying like what you said go to your local police office you said you speak thai, speak to the boss big police whatever tell him you pay with the rent make a few joke's but above all show respect whether you mean it or not bit like home, then up to you donate a sum which you think is ok to the I think policeman's wife bereavement fund or something like that. wheather the widow gets it or not you will come out on top, but above all else they know you know as the fallang who speaks thai is no fool and has a heart, better than they know you as the tight git, you will see the benefits
