Wells Fargo has put both Thailand and Philipines on fraud alert until further notice. This means that your ATM/Debit Card will not work at the ATM's
You can go to CitiBank branch and get a cash advance on your card, but this is the only method available at this time to get cash.
I do not know if other USA banks will be following suit, but at this time it would probably be advisable to use traveler's checks for any upcoming trips to Thailand as ATM tranactions seem dubious.

I just used the Siam Commerical ATM at Robinson's on Suk Soi 19. No problem at all getting baht. Other people in line also having no problems.
ATM card from small regional bank, STAR/Cirrus/Interlink network.
Never a bad idea to have several ways to get local currency in a foreign country: cash, TCs, ATM/Debit, and credit card all useful options when desperate.

I've had that happen to me.. Went to the ATM at landmesk hoterl and worked!! Seems some of the smaller ATM's dont want to accept ATM card....
This was not today!!

When I arrived, last week, my Wells Fargo card did not work on the ATM at the Landmark hotel. "Data on card incomplete or missing" was displayed. It worked fine at the ATM on Soi 5, and one in the Ploen Chit shopping center.
A few minutes ago in Pattaya I was able to get cash at a "free standing with a lot of chrome" ATM outside the Big C grocery.
So some Wells Fargo cards work, most of the time, at some ATMs. When I read this thread, I had a moment of feeling decidedly un-hansum...

Yesterday had problems on all my UK credit cards and also my Kasikorn card not working which was strange.
All back to normal today...thank goodness

A friend back home told me that WFargo and BofA may be letting pure ATM cards continue but those with a Visa Debit feature will be replaced. Too much risk for pinless expenditures.

Yes the message of "data on card incomplete or missing" is the one you will get from the ATM when you try to use it.

Otherwise, your Wells Fargo Visa Check Cards allow you to receive an over the counter cash disbursement at any financial institution or bank displaying the Visa logo. To receive cash, present your Check Card and identification inside the banking location at the teller window and request a cash disbursement. This is NOT a "cash advance" with interest fees; funds will be debited from your primary checking account linked to your Check Card and any Wells Fargo fees incurred will be reimbursed. Once in those countries, if you have Internet access, please use the international ATM locator on Visa.com to locate a Visa member bank near you.
Besides having to go to the bank this is actually working out better than using the ATM. For one Wells Fargo is not charging any fees for this transaction, ATM withdrawals were charged at a $5.00 USD per transaction. Two, the maximum ATM withdrawal is $500.00 where the maximum cash disbursement is up to your Check Card maximum.
Any Debit card purchases in Thailand are charged a 3% foreign conversion fee, so the best deal is to do the cash disbursements at a bank. Passport is all that is required.

It really is a good idea to inform the security dept of your cash/credit cards that you will be traveling to certain countries before you leave. If you are planning any large purchases like buying a condo be sure everything is in place with your bank or financial institution before you arrive in Thailand. I learned all of this the hard way.
Last year I had some fraudulent activity on three accounts: Wells Fargo was one and Bangkok Bank was another. When I reported the fraud both US Banks responded immediately and professionally and after an investigation my money was returned.
On the other hand Bangkok Bank responded by asking me if I had a Thai girlfriend and after ten months they still have not done anything.
My advice if you have a local bank account is to have two of them; setup one for ATM card access and keep a small amount in it. The other account should not have any cards attached to it. Transfer as needed from the larger account to the smaller account.
