Ok, I must take credit for thinking up this little brainstorm. I travel a lot, and have lost my cards on occasion, and nothing sucks more then not having access to the cash you have worked to party with.

So you are off in some far off country, and your ATM card is not giving you any money for some reason. Or you have just lost your Debit card, and would like to have some cash before you cancel it, while you wait a few days for your bank to fedex one to you.

Here is the deal....If you don't already, set up an account on WesternUnion.com. Just send your self cash to be picked up in BKK or where else. I think the max you can do a day is 2K USD. Ya it might cost some money for the transaction, but it sure beats having no cash to have fun with or survive.

Once that is done, call your bank to cancel your card, and go to your nearest bank (Most all in BKK have Westernunion Pick up).

Anyways, that is just a trick to get yourself out of a jam. Make sure you keep your card info elsewhere.

Good idea. Always good to have a back-up plan.

Whats the fee? You can get traveler cheques gratis. A money transfer via Western Union for $2,000 is about $75.

I am not a travelers check expert, so I have not a clue on them. It is just one way to get money, not to pinch pennies.

Mr Alan
Here are the rules from the Western Union website:

"Initially, the maximum amount of money you can send online with a revolving 30-day period is $999.99. Once you have used the Western Union Money transfer service on the web, at least once over the course of 120 days, you may send up to a maximum of $2,000 within a revolving 30-day period."

I looked at the exchange rate they quoted, and Western Union makes a profit of about 1.6% on the exchange from dollars to baht compared to rates quoted on various websites. So that would be an additional $32 (on top of the $75 fee) for a $2000 transaction.

But if you use a credit or debit card, I don't think you can transfer the entire $2000 in one transaction, so you pay the $75 each time (or maybe a slightly reduced fee), plus you will likely pay a transaction fee to your credit card company.

Lastly, I wonder if you can transfer money from a US credit card (or other account) from a country outside the US. I would not be surprised if they block the transaction based on your IP address for security reasons.

Seems like it would be a lot easier to just take travelers checks. If I lived in LOS, or spent a lot of time there, I would probably open a checking account at Citibank in the US, and open a Citibank account in Thailand (and get a Citibank Thailand issued credit card).

It has been a long time since I used travels cheques, here in the UK I used to have to pay commission to buy them, there is a tax to pay in Thailand (used to be 13THB per bill) and there was a charge for cashing in unused ones.

I choose to carry 3 cards, a mix of credit and debit cards, never carry all in the same place so one may be in my wallet, one with my passport and a third with my documentation.

I prefer have one debit and two credit card but at present I only have one credit card so I have two debit cards for two different banks.

My preferred one is the Nationwide debit card which there is no charge or commission for using ATM’s worldwide and I use the credit card for purchases, the FX inter-bank rate for the days I used the ATM’s shows a very small difference of no more than 0.3THB and on one some days my banks rate was better than the inter-bank rate.

Lastly always make shore that you have access to phone and account numbers should need to report them missing, last year I spent a considerable amount of time on the phone because I did not have the right number to call to report my card lost, only to find it minutes after I put the phone down.

I have sent money via western union from all sorts of dodgey countries using my US Bank Cards. No Problem.

You guys stuck in a jam, can sit in your hotel room saving your $70-100. I will gladly pay $100 to have money to not stop my party.

About 2 years ago my brother in Paris needed some cash quickly. I tried sending it via Western Union and their web site. It was limited to the $999.99 USD as mentioned previously.

The transaction failed. I called my bank card customer service (one of the real big USA ones) and they said they would not authorize Western Union transactions unless I called them in advance to tell them about it. Too much fraud.

So, just a suggestion - if you really want/need this option you might consider telling your bank before you really need it.
