I'm going to Bangkok for 5 days next month and i'm going to use my Lloyds TSB Current Account Card to get money from ATMs during those 5 days.

Has anyone used this card at ATMs in Bangkok? Has anyone had any problems with it? I won't be buying things with the card (because I don't think there's any fraud protection on it) - i'll just be using it at established bank ATMs.

This card is my only means to get money (for the ladies) during the 5 days so I want to be sure that it'll work! I'd hate to be in LOS and have no money for women!

(I live in Japan and my japanese cards undoubtedly won't work so I don't have many options).

British banks will often block a cash card if they see multiple withdrawals in Thailand. The only way to unblock it is to call them so if it happens outside banking hours then you may have a problem.

I think i'd better just call 'em and check before I go.

Can you imagine being in LOS with no money for ladies?!!! Doesn't bear thinking about - my idea of a really bad dream.

heres my horror story

was in Thailand in May usually I get travelers cheques but as this was a last minute trip i.e decided to go to Thailand on Thursday morning was on Thai airways flight that night

so I transfered £5k from my Lloyd's business account into my personal account

when I got to Thailand my card was blocked (found out when I got back that the bank decided it was a suspicious transfer WTF its my money !!!! and froze my account)

took 5 days to sort out with numerous calls to the uk

before my card started to work

and to top it all each atm transaction was at a terrible rate

plus there was a £3.74 transaction charge each time I used my atm card

don't bother get some travelers cheques or use your credit card

when I was in the Thai farmers bank they had a maximum of 10k per card transaction but heres the interesting thing they advised me to go to the bangkok bank as it had a much higher transaction limit

so now I am looking for a new bank

Stuckinapub:-

That is just the thing I want to avoid!!! Thanks so much for sharing that!

I think i'll take a wad of cash out on my cash card here in japan, get travellers cheques, and use them while i'm there. Last time I was there I used travellers cheques and thought it was a pain in the ass. I much prefer just going to an ATM and getting out what I need there.

But for the assurance that i'll have money - i'll get t. cheques I think again.

3.74GBP for a 10,000 Bt transaction? I thought my bank was mercenary.
A 20,000Bt withdrawal costs me 4.50GBP at the moment & I am spitting feathers!!
I use my SCB ATM card most of the time but occasionally I transfer/withdraw funds from my UK account. It always amazes me the charges that they levy..it's like talking to MI5 trying to get them to explain/justify their costs.
Having said that, I have never had any ATM withdrawals refused..but I have lived in Asia for +10yrs so they may be used to my spending habits by now.

DSBones,,your getting out of it CHEAP. Us poor convicts pay AUD 18.14 for a 20,000BHT withdrawal. Being around 7.7 Pounds!!!!!

Never again.

Mel.

Travellers cheques and put them into your Thai bank account then use ATM is the answer.

Just come back from Thailand and I was using my Lloyds tsb debit card, first of all they blocked my card on the first attempt, but a quick call home to the phone bank which is open 24hours soon sorted out the problem.
Every time I took money out the thai bank charged me 3 quid and then my own bank charged me about 2 quid, so 5 quid everytime I used my card, daylight robbery.

Use it as a reserve by all means but never go to LOS with only 1 way of getting money.

As long as you stay in a hotel with an in house safe and are not a plonker to show the ladies the number you will be fine.

Take cash and or travellers checks. Credit Cards are ok if you pay back quick for the hotel and emergencys.

Take out what you need for a night and leave a few k somewhere in the room to pay the lady(s) or if she stays all night take it out of the safe when she in the shower.

I dont even trust my wife to know the combination.
Why let a complete stranger ? if your drink got spiked its easy to get cleaned out.

All bank cards work abroad but they charge and can block
if they think something dodgy is going on so check beforehand or have the hotline number handy.

They are also not so clever its a few day delay before the transfer goes through, and as long as you have enough in your account its easy to go overdrawn which can take a week after you return to process.

At the end of the trip im usually on 10 to 20 k a day with the alcohol its easy to loose track how many times I went to the ATM.

Last piece of advice banks in thailand spit out cash first the opposite to europe I lost bank cards twice and 1 time I had no cc with me.
Once was 10 yrs ago on sukomvit by the Landmark and luckily I went back the next day and got it back.
Basically I got the money f***ed off randy as f*** the card came back out but I was gone. Luckily it was swallowed and not stolen.

The 2nd time was in pattaya 6 yrs ago and I luckily had a lloyds tsb card because my parents live in the uk. so I asked the old man to put money in my account, which he begrugingly did as he knows what I get up to.

It was my money and I told him it was for the hotel bill but he knows bloody well it was for hookers.

Imagine being stuck 10,000 km from home and no money with all the pussy around not very nice.

A friend arrived 1 day before I left and he borrowed me some as well.

Since then I take 3 different bank cards and 2 cc and cash
but thats to confuse the wife as well. she knows how much cash I have so when its going down I top it up with the cards which she never sees.

she would only waste it on gold or whatever I rather spend it on hookers and do something good for the 3rd world.
