Hi everyone,

This is my first post and I must say that this site is fantastic!  Now for my post.  I see that a lot of the members here work in Thailand.  I'm looking for a job in LOS.   I'm a Thai with a US citizenship.  I speak fluent Thai and read pretty well.  I grew up in the states.  Can anyone here recommend a place to start looking for a job in Thailand?  If anyone here knows of any opportunity, especially with multi-national corporations that's looking for somone with IT skills and excellent communication abilities, please send me an e-mail.  Thanks guys.

Welcome Iamanut!
Although I think you might be able to do a search on this board and find some information, I would say that you have two options.  One, look for a multi-national existing in Thailand and the other, look for one in the US with connections or branch offices in Thailand.

The first option is maybe less likely to work as there are a fair number of existing Thai there with possibly sufficient IT skills.

The second option would seem, at least to me to be a better bet.  Sometimes US companies prefer to have "one of their own" on the job.  I would suggest taking a trip to your local library and look for information about companies in your area who have ties in Thailand and go from there.

That having been said, you can always try it from both angles but I think you will find your better bet to be starting from the US and working your way to Thailand as you are more likely to end up with a larger salary and you will have both "Home field" advantages.

That having been said, at this time I think IT experience in the area of security, banking, insurance, Government are the largest markets, or at least what Thailand seems to have the least of and imports the most of.

Good luck!

Ichi

Do you have Thai nationality at all?

If so...the Classifieds section of the Bangkok Post is a good place to start....a lot of jobs are closed to foreigners.....all the companies I work for all the IT staff are Thai......though I don't think it's a closed job for foreigners.....

If you have Thai nationality.....you've got it made...if not....GET IT!!!....LOL

BoomARang makes a good point.....If you applied as a Thai National you may limit your salary options...better to sell yourself Stateside as a man with Thai skills.....

Another advantage of starting stateside is that you can get out "easier" if you want to.  But, be warned, the longer you stay "in the field" the less easy it may be to go back, but that's a whole different discussion in and of itself and not something you should be worried about now.

Again, go for it and good luck!

Hola brother,

Always good to hear from a fellow Thai.   How old are you?  If your parents are both Thai, you can still get your Thai nationality (priceless in that you can own land, have a right to work with it, and be able to operate businesses without unwanted local partners).   Before you come over, get a Thai birth certificate issued by the local Thai consulate or embassey if you're closer to D.C.   You'll need it to get your id card at the amphur when you're over here.

Surely you have family over here, yes?

Depends purely on how you sell yourself...I am not on an expat package as such...but I earn more in money term and certainly more in real terms than at home

I think the best thing would be to look stateside.   Dell has a budding Bangkok office (that supports the Penang facility).  Seagate... um... Basically you might try to present yourself the Thai way.   "I'm willing to work in Thailand for 60-70% of the standard compensation package."    I'm sure whatever's left will be more than enough to enjoy life.
