I thought those were weekly rates - ie 30k a week Hard to believe, ain't it? Actually, any local salary above B100k a month is pretty good going in LOS - and you can live pretty well, even in BKK, for quite a bit less than that. Hard for tourists to believe, I know. But tourists (thinking in their local hard currency and in holiday mode) burn through vast amounts of cash quite unnecessarily. Once you start thinking in baht, and have to penny-pinch a bit, you find yourself spending FAR less without any great hardship. Soon I shall be picking up my supper from a food stall in Soi 5 - a glorious mussel omelette + bean shoots concoction which will set me back all of B25. I'll also pick up a couple of cheap beers in the 7/11. When I was a tourist, I'd probably have just plunked myself down in the Landmark Coffee Shop and then chucked them a credit card without a second thought. Blowing what? B800 or so? Now I don't, because that sort of money needs to be conserved for wickeder purposes. It's no longer small change. Of course, if you live here & are on a reasonable whack, you get to eat out quite often too. But most people would no more think of eating every day in 4/5-star hotels & similar than they would back in farangland. So it's not as bad as it looks. But no, I wouldn't like to be stuggling on B30k a month. Even that's possible, but any fun would need to be strictly rationed.

There are some huge salaries here. The highest paid farang I know is on $20,000 US a month. Of the Thai staff working with me, most of whom are degree qualified the top salary is 18,000THB a month. Most months I struggle to spend 60% of my salary.

All these discussions just confirm my believe that it would be a rather bad idea to move to BKK and search for one of the rare local job offerings. With only 400€ for a ticket from Europe and with these low hotel costs? And with 6 weeks of vacation pa and a local salary that could never be even remotely approached in BKK? No way! Why should I risk my career for such a move? @ Yurune: But I might consider to apply for the job of this specific farang you mentioned - well, maybe. In which position and for which company is he working? Cheers, Fritz

I'd rather not say.......sorry, it's not really my job to be identifying him....plus of course I may just apply for the job after that unfortunate accident he had next week.

If you are lucky enough to land a job which pays anything like Western payscales (obviously the ideal), then you simply don't have a problem. In BKK, you are far richer then you were back home. Such jobs are scarce. For most people seriously considering a move, the calculation will have to go something like this: 1) You will be earning only a fraction of what you earned back home. 2) Your standard of living will not fall to anything like the same extent as your income, as living costs are low. However, it may fall a bit. 3) Your quality of life may improve out of sight. This an entirely personal assessment, but it doesn't hurt to remember that money is only a means to other ends. A semi-relevant codicil. Since I moved to BKK, I find I'm getting a lot more out of the P4P scene as a relatively impecunious expat than I did as as a rich tourist. There are several reasons for this, but I suspect one is that the BGs now cost me real money instead of loose change. At some level, I probably value these experiences more highly as a result.

Yurune , No need to threaten me . I have already resigned week after next so you can apply for the job yesterday and cancel the accident that happened next week .
