Tire, TC's get a better rate but there are two problems with TC's. One, they deduct a commission when they change TC's while there is no commission on cash. Two, You have to carry your passporet if you want to change TC's. No such requirement for cash. I hate carrying my passport. As for Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy, I would walk to Nana Plaza (a leasurely 15 minute walk from Grand President) and take a taxi or the skytrain to Soi Cowboy. The Nana station is right there as you come out on Sukhumwit from Soi 11 and it is just one stop to Asoke which is where you want to go for Soi Cowboy. Happy hunting. Kris

The TC commission (actually a govt stamp duty) is trivial. TCs are still the best way to go. NO worries about credit card fraud, no hassles about ATM compatibility or navigating an ATM in Thai, and NO HUGE COMMISSIONS that CC companies charge for cash advances on plastic. Also no daily limits. A friend with $50,000 US in bank, in USA, found that all he could get for daily cash advance on card from same acct, while in Thailand = 5000 baht. So go ahead and carry your PP just long enough to do the job anyway.

Sup' Tire, : And if you decide to carry your passport around, please make sure you have a photocopy of it back at the hotel room. It would suck if for some reason you lose it and then you really will be S.O.L. I personally don't like to nickle and dime myself when exchanging money. I tend to spend it before I make it back to my hotel room. So .. this is why I change 1/2 at the airport. But ..... as others have pointed out, no matter if you change it at the airport or at a TC, you will be fine.

On my last trip there last month I got a better rate at the airport when I landed than on Sukhumwit the next day. At the airport I used one of the services after clearing immigration and customs. As a matter of fact I found a lot of difference in the rates on Sukhumwit. There was a difference of around 40Bt per $ between the freestanding booth to the East of the Sukhumwit side entrance to the Ambassador Hotel (the beer garden) and the booth near the pedestrian overbridge immediately to the West of the entrance. Maybe one of them was late in updating the rate. I tend not to shop around but sometimes the rates stare youin the face. Kris

Tire , I think you have been given pretty good and exhaustive information and advice by most of those who have posted on this thread . There are just one or two other matters :- (1) Your original query about ATM's that exchange cash :- Yes , there are such ATM's in Thailand and definitely one or two at the airport . At these machines you can change various currencies into Thai Baht . The currencies that are accepted are displayed on the front of the machine along with very clear instructions on how to use the machines . However , because machines can fail - I recommend that you try as much as possible to use the Exchange Counters manned by humans . Oh , and another thing - try to always use Exchange Counters that are run by Banks ( you will see the name of the Bank prominently displayed ). This way you are sure always and at all times of getting the most current rate . (2) One poster has already pointd out that a US$100 bill gets more Baht to the dollar than other bills . This goes further - $100 bills get more Baht to the Dollar than $50 bills ; $50 bills get more than $10 bills & $10 bills get more than $1 bills . (3) The recommendation to carry most of your money in Bills or T.C.'s is sound because I have found that many a time (depending on the value of the transaction ) the total deductions ( charges ) at the ATM are such that your nett Dollar to the Baht is lower than when you exchange bills or T.C.'s

No, sometimes when they're still young and pretty we get them skunk-drunk and sell them to the gay gogos off Surawongse. But usually it's just sending them home with a particularly homely preop TS.
