Hello all -

When I was there in March, I used the ATM machines exclusively, but had some anxious moments when I discovered that most Asian ATM's won't let you choose between chequing and savings acounts - they automatically debit your current account, which in my case had very little in it. However, a visit to my bank's website informed me that it would just default to your other account(s) in that case. I was somewhat overdrawn when I made it home, but I figured what the hell, as long as the cash is still coming out of the machine, who cares? (Got to get the girls their money somehow!)

I think this business about old banknotes is bullshit. If you can still spend them in the bars and everywhere else, they are still legal tender as far as I'm concerned. I still have a couple of Singapore tens that the money exchange in Vancouver wouldn't take because they were no longer being issued. Huh? Still legal tender on the street.

I would have thought that with the Asian love of money they'd take just about anything - thank god we're not that fussy on this side of the pond.

Just my thoughts...

I was there in March and I too am from Korea (teaching English there)  Here is my experience....
I bought Visa traveller's checks.  The exchange rate is better when you buy tc rather than cash.  Anyway there was a problem, the exchange booths in BKK and Pattaya would not take them being from Korea.  There was only one exchange booth in the airport that would tke them and I had to go to the Thai Military Bank directly and have my money exchanged.  My advice is to get American Express traveller's checks and you shouldn't have any problems.  Also make sure you use the hotel's safe deposits boxes and don't wander around with tons of cash.  I didn't have any problems but you should take the normal travellers precautions.  Anyway the exchange rate is much better than it was a year ago.

Thanks newguy.

I'm thinking I will just change it into baht at the bank if possible.
If I get american travelers checks and then change them into baht I think I will lose twice.

I always carry $500USD in American Exprees checks and leave them in the hotel safe. In case I get ripped off, I'm not broke. I haven't been ripped yet but you never know.

Hey Cubyking
You may wish to contact Siam Commercial Bank Foriegn Exchange Dept Tel 544-5700-14 I don't know the country codes from Korea. Finding someone speaking English and willing to be helpful should be easy and they can direct you and answer all questions. I don't think you will have any problem exchanging  your Won to Bhat directly in this or any other large Bank at resonable rates and commisions. You may however want to purcase some amount of Baht before arriving in Bkk to tide you over until you can make your exchanges. You know for taxi fares etc.

Spent October and February in Thailand, used my Visa card numerous times for amounts up to 20,000 baht at a time, never a problem.

Last week, back here for an extended stay, used the card for petrol (350b) groceries at BigC (1400b). Went to use it the next day, again at BigC, declined - over limit. Impossible says l, it cannot be. Have to ring home to Visa to find out why. Turned out that when they saw charges for Thailand on my card they decided something was not kosher. This despite having used it at the same BigC maybe 20 times previously. It had never rung alarm bells before, no explanation why this time was different.

I always use a combo, that way when something fails you have a back up.  Usually end up leaving the country with some cash - so I generally have 5-10K on the way in.  I usualy have about 1/4 in TC's and the balance in ATM and Visa.  I also always carry a spare ATM card, and an ATM card of an empty account.  THat way, if I lose the main card(s) I can cancel them, and transfer money via phone/web to the empty account, and start using it.
Future, had something similar happen with my visa when on a biz trip.  Iwas doing a 'tour of europe' and had meetings in 12 different countries in just over three weeks.  At this time I used to be running up wicked expenses, so I had a large limit (25K Euro) on my card.  It was refused in  Hotel (embarresing as the MD was with me) and later turned out to be that they suspected that duplicate cards had been made and were being spent as charges turned up in four different coutries on the same day (it was a monday and some charges from the weekend hadnt  been processed).  I left France on Thursday, was in Spain on Friday, and in Portugal over the w/e and in Copenhagen on Mon.

Thta is why I now take the elaborate precautions of having two accounts I can draw on, a supply of cash, Travellers cheques and at least two credit cards - It gets to be a bbitch when they are all in the wallet together though!

Certainly embarrasing when it happens in a crowded supermarket and you are the only foreigner around for miles. Lots of strange looks as it was on the same day some guys got busted with a stack of fake gold Visa and Amex cards.

What annoyed me was that l had been on the phone to Visa a couple of weeks earlier to discuss a few matters about going to Thailand. From previous experience, l know that they log a brief note of your call on your file so there shouldn't have been a problem.
