veejrah: I'm a little confused. Why do you need 1,000 baht at the Visa/immigration counter?? Are you planning on bribing them?? ha ha ha!! To distinguish whether your 100 bill is before 1997 or not, check out this site. I think an image is easier to see, then writing text!! ha ha ha!! http://www2.travlang.com/money/USD.html IMO: I would not open a bank account in BKK. It's too much hassle not to mention the transfer fee to wire in money. Just bring cold hard cash and exchange it at the airport or whereever. Keeps things simple and much less hassle. Hope this helps you out!! Have a good trip.

soidiamond said: "Open a thai bankaccount(ATM )transfer money from your country to LOS an you'll be smiling all the way you will always get the best rate if you do this." At least here in the US, it is at LEAST a US$30 fee to do an international wire transfer = ~1200THB. You would have to transfer a LOT of cash to beat even the AMEX Traveller's Cheque fee of 1%...unless you know something I don't...otherwise, a swell idea, especially for longer stays... No problems opening an account here these days. Some banks are actually inviting foreigners to open accounts. Wire transfer fees may be pricey, so send in only large sums! Note: if you happen to live in Singapore, Golden Mile Complex has an underground money transfer service which is faster and cheaper than the banks. It's nice to have a local ATM card (or two) and not have to carry cash around.

I get travelers checks for free from my US bank so that's a no-brainer. Check with your bank or credit union to see if you can get them for free. Even at 1% it's not a bad deal considering you can get a refund if stolen or lost. Travelers checks get excellent exchange rates in BKK, but you will need your passport to exchange them. As others have said, there is no problem getting a few days worth of baht at the airport, and then get the rest at any of the many banks around town (the big banks have excellent A/C so I didn't mind standing in line when necessary). If you bring cash from the US, make sure you have the newer bills with larger portraits. I also was able to use my ATM card a few times, but it would be better to bring enough travelers checks or cash if possible.

If you have American Express Gold Card you get TC's Free. You can cash at American Express Exchange at BKK airport no charge, also A/E Bank IBM Building. I once tried to transfer $100 from my checking account to my TGF checking account, my bank wanted to charge $45 transfer Fee. Using ATM card in Thailand you will incurr ATM Fees from both your bank and host bank.

Thanks for your info I would carry cash as I am in BKK for a 7 days period only. So I would like to know how much does the bank/credit card company charge you if you withdraw cash from the ATM in lets say multiples of 5000 Bhats. I have a Standard Charted Bank Gold Card. Over here in my country the Cash Withdrawl fee is 3% of the total amount. So how much would I have to pay to the host bank. Any Ideas???

Veejrah, I think it won't be a problem to open a account but I don't think its a good idea to open it at the airport I don't even know if its possible. I went to the headoffice of my Thai bank to open an account . I put in 5.000 baht, 15 min work and i had my card and passbook in my hand. Farangs opening accounts , no problem at the headoffice they are used to this everyday. About that "15 day visa " :don't know because i'm from a country that gets a 30 day visa. But i think I will be ok. They had a ban on farangs opening accounts a couple of years before , but they quickly changed it back again when they realized they were losing more money this way.
