You should consider yourself lucky if that's all you have to pay. In chinese tradition there are I believe 18 gifts that exchange hands between the family before the marriage. I think it's called some sort of engagement tradition.
Anyways, Some friends have spent close to 50K US on the gifts from the males side to the females side. Now, this is an extreme amount, but more common it close to between 5K and 10K for gold, jewelry and money.
Just my 2 cents, since TPE and the others stated what I was going to state!! ha ha ha!!

I feel little unfair to ask her stay at hometown wait for me there months. You know no jobs, friends elsewhere etc. She does like to go to disco with friends every now and then, and just hang out and talk with friends(some bg, some not). They do all! -young ones I mean, I believe when they get older they realise friends are not so important. Bg friends come and go...
On the other hand I know friends can give bad influence. Some her bg friends ask her don't she want money cause she does not "go with men", she answered she does not want money, but a man...sniff

Yes, not easy situation NEP, depends i guess how serious you are ; but as stated many times, IMHO ; if you are keen, then no doubts whatsoever, have the TG parked upcouintry with the parents when your overseas - as many of the Bkk based bros will tell you, after the young innocent TG just off the bus from ban-nok, a "sponsered" TG is next best - often you dont even have to pay

It's called "Earnest Money" and it is common in many Asian countries.
Tell your girl that this is not a custom in your country, but you will abide by her cultures customs because you "love her too much". Then point out that in your country, it is customary for the brides family to pay for all of the wedding costs. I think at that point you'll find her and her family very willing to understand that in a cross- cultural relationship, both sides have to be willing to cooperate and not stand on "tradition" so much.
Of course, if your not sure that you can trust her, you shouldn't even be sending that small monthly sum.

Take note of what HS said, she is more than likely still working. She has too.
As to her showing you her bank account details, it means nothing, mine ran two books/accounts at the same bank. As to checking the bar she worked at, they can change bars like they change underwear. Sorry to be so blunt, but they (TGs) are many steps ahead of us when it come to covering up the truth.
Also its highly unlikely the TG will marry you initially for love or that her family will allow her to do so. The reason is almost surely for "Status for her and her family" and that means that as a ferang you have to have money and you also have to show others (family & village) that you have a degree of wealth (normally by buying her land in the village). This also means displaying some wealth at the village engagement ceremony.
If you cant come up with the gifts and expected payments to the family and her for the engagement and indicate that you can keep both her and family in the future,then her family will simply loose face in the village.
There are some good web sights on the expected marriage payment amounts for the TGs indicating a starting range of about 50000Baht - all the way up to the Million depending on the class/status of the TG, but in my view it is for free and never super cheap for love.
