The Machine
How much is set by the limit on your card.
In my case I have a 2000 Australian dollar limit which means I can withdraw that amount of Thai baht in a 24 hour period.
They usually rip you off on the rate but it is convenient.
I usually take some travellers cheques as they cost me nothing in charges cept the 20 baht service charge and the rate of exchange is good.
My ATM card is for back up.

The 20,000 limitation is mostly a technical one.

The machine can not deliver more than 20 bills at a time. If you want to test what I am saying, try withdrawing 19,900. The machine will say it can not perform the operation. It will do 19,500 - won't do 18,800 etc....

If you want 40,000. You will have to do 20,000 times 2.

Hmmmm, then an ATM with a 20 banknote limit should be able to dispense any 100-baht increment of 16,800 baht or less, right? Assuming there are enough 1000's, 500's and 100's left in the safe, of course.

Other valid combination's greater than 16,800?

17,000 - 17,300
17,500 - 17,700
18,000 - 18,200
18,500
18,600
19,000
19,100
19,500
20,000

and if out of 1'000s, it will be 10'000 max. per go.

I recommend the atm global from TFB. you will get it in 15 minutes w/o any permits.

daily limit 100'000 baht.

global use, you can even check the balance in foreign countries.

so if you planning a trip to LOS, t/t the money in advance and use while you are here.

I am able to withdraw up yo B 30.000,00 with foreign ATM card from Bank of Asia ATM's. When using my local Bank of Asia ATM card I am able to withdraw B 40.000,00 in one go. When using other ATM's the above explanations from VJ and RTB seem to be in place. Do not know why.... but rather convenient.

Also, be advised of the hidden costs of ATM withdrawals using credit cards. For instance, almost every bank charges a trasanction fee (as much as 3%), plus interest accruing from the following day (not your next monthly statement date), of about 0.1%. This is on top of any difference in the forex rate that you may end up paying anyway.

It makes sense to take some cash and TCs along, and keep them in the hotel safe. I use ATMs only when running really low on fuel (i.e., when I've seriously miscalculated my Sanuk budget ), and that too my bank's ATM card, not Visa, AmEx or MasterCard.

VJ Nice link. I wondered about the 10K/20K limit. Also from the site;

"New Innovations
Several companies are advertising ATMs for the blind. These machines would be located at kiosks rather than bank drive-thrus. For several years, the keypads at ATMs were equipped with braille for the blind or visually impaired. "

My bank back in the USA put the braille machines in the drive through windows
