Of course you are right BigD....I just threw that one in for a laugh before hitting the sack last night....

However, it does make me laugh when people falsely believe that these things don't happen at home, I've been attacked in the USA, but never here.

My parents visited me in Thailand.

When my father got home he found he'd had a strange bill on his credit card. Someone had used it around the world. He then realised he'd not used this card in Thailand, but had at Duty Free in the airport on departure. I guess someone realised he wouldn't see his bill for a few weeks.

I feel safer here than in London or USA...and meet some people here who are just so paranoid about being outside of the 'Civilised' world.

And I do find your Land of Scams comment a bit OTT...but then you visit Pattaya, I prefer not to....maybe that's how you see it...wouldn't want to live somewhere I felt like that about.

You are not one of them, however...or certainly didn't appear to be...in fact I seem to remember you rather enjoying yourself!!

Mr Alan
Many of the suggestions are good for any trip away from home, especially in a foreign country. The risk of theft may not be any higher in Thailand, but the consequences could be higher if it happens away from home. Not necessarily paranoia, just a way to make sure your trip is not ruined. After doing the things that BigDUSA suggested, I feel less paranoid, not more.

Years ago I bought one of those fancy leather organizers, during a trip to BKK 2K USD worth of travelerís checks slipped out at Los Angeles airport. Noticed this on the plane after a few drinks, not a pleasant flight. Had receipts in my wallet, got new checks from AMEX in five days in BKK.

Later during a heated discussion with TGF in taxi, I left the organizer in the taxi. It had my passport, 10K THB and credit cards and fortunately business cards from companies I do business with in Thailand. Cab driver calls one of my customers, customer calls me all is returned. I give taxi driver 1000 THB for his good deed.

Decide to give new organizer to TG got a free screw, come to think of it, it actually coat me $100.00.

Another trip I went drinking with a friend. My TGF? wanted to stay in the room and watch TV. Came back drunk to find her and all my money gone from the hotel key safe. She made note where I kept the key and cleaned me out 20K THB. Traced her ass back to her home on the Laos border. The next night I paid two cops 100 THB each for waking them up at 11:00 PM they went along with me to her house armed with machine guns. She was sitting around the fire until she seen the cops and ran for the fields. The cops pursed on motorcycle. Quite a surreal scene. Got my money back and had the option to put her in jail for a long time. Passed on that and just kept my money. See yah

I agree with everything BigD says, better safe than sorry. Especially on the passport. Believe me the Thai USA embassy is in no big hurry to get a replacement passport for one that is lost. Plan on staying in Thailand 2-4 weeks before a replacement is done.

One other tip. Best to keep your money split between your two front pockets, so if you do get pickpocketed by katoeyís you will at least have two shots. They donít call them fast fingers for no reason. İ

i must be doing something wrong here.
i have spent many nights with the girls with money left in my pockets, money laying around the room and no problems.
i have often given the girls my wallet with all the money and cards in it and again no problems.
i leave my camera's and Video on the table and no problem.

have no problems with LB's,can spot them a mile away and steer clear of them.
but the only time i THINK i have been robbed was on the street by a couple of the boys in brown.
but no proof.

even as a newbie to LOS 3 years ago i never thought about theft, not in my nature.
only since i have started reading Forums that i realise people are so paranoid about the girls and what they might do.

I do not think most of the advice pertains to being ripped off by BG's, but mainly either losing items or credit card theft usually by someone that you did not transct business with, such as the trash man finding a credit card receipt.

Bottom line there is no reason to carry most of the crap we lug around. An actual passport is uneccessary and a copy will do. Limit your credit card transactions to large purchase such as your hotel bill and pay the rest at shops and for food in cash. ATM's work great over here, you get a good exchange rate and the transaction cost is 1.5> 3.00 USD.

I feel safer in Thailand than in the USA, but not as safe as in Singapore.

I carry one credit card, 20K baht.  That is sufficent and if it gets lost, no big deal.

I do make a copy of my passport to carry, but I do that everywhere, do you know how hard it is to replace if you lose it?? (post 9/11 US takes 6-8 weeks, Thanks Dubbya!!)

What I do different is that I keep a couple of Ben Franklins in the Hotel Safe, they work much better that T/C if you need to drop a bribe.  I usually have currency from other countries with me but that is because of my erratic schedule.

I guess if you cannot afford to lose it, do not carry it.

No Nokna. İYou've just been lucky. İAnd all that bluster will quickly evaporate the day you find all that money and camera equiptment your leaving around missing in the morning.

Your statement is a bit like saying, "Hey, I've been crossing the road without looking for years now and nothing bad has ever happened to me. İIt never even occured to me to look both ways until I started reading the paronoia on this forum".

Sounds pretty dumb eh'?

"only since i have started reading Forums that i realise people are so paranoid about the girls and what they might do."

As far as the girls go, the "paranoia" is because quite a few of them steal. İPure and simple. İProstitutes are just not always of the highest moral character.

The precautions discussed on this thread are not necessarily being taken out of paranoia. İMost people do not assume something WILL happen to them, they are trying to protect themselves against the unlikely event that it might.

S**t happens. İBetter to take a few precautions to reduce the chance of having your trip ruined.

Saying that, I do find the overly paranoid types a bit ridiculous. İSome people really take precaution to the extreme and I think it is silly. İHowever, taking a few reasonable and simply steps to protect oneself is not being paranoid, rather it is being wise.

Never tell the BG the real date your going to leave. Always push it up by a week. If the bg thinks you are leaving the next day, she may rip you off because she knows that most guys will not stay to make a complaint to the police. If she pulls a rip she will pay her own barfine for a few days untill the heat is over. My favorite bg in Pattaya told me about one girl who works at her bar (face like a angel) pulls this alot.

Many bg will not steal all your money, just 500 or 1k. How many guys after a night out with a few beers under their belt and looking to get laid as soon as they can, pull out their money and count it? I know I don't. That's why I like hotels with in room safe.

17 days untill I'm reloaded into my favorite illusion. That illusion is the one where young women tell me I'm hansum man, sexy man and for the most part, I buy into it as long as it doesn;t cost more then 500 s/t, 1000 l/t.

For my next trip to LOS (that begins in just over 24 hours) I will be staying at the Hotel Knox.
It is a unique hotel where each room is an actual bank vault with a bed in it. There are armed guards posted outside each room and each ensuite bathroom has its own German Shepherd attack dog on stand-by.
The hotel is very girl-friendly but if any theft is detected (by infra-red or video camera) then the girl is seized, taken to a special room and executed.
Just to be on the safe side I'm not going to leave the hotel and I will only carry traveller's cheques.
