Nokna, Who speaks of some of the bars...? As you I have experienced this in almost all bars where I have been to. Sometimes it makes me laugh, if my change would be Baht 100 and they try to bother me with the coins. But on the other hand what is Baht 10 or 20 for a rich farang on holidays like us...?

ccvvbb: Oaktoad said it best. "Tipping in Thailand is not expected, but appreciated." When I do I tip, I tip the same percentages as I would in the U.S for the same service. So ... if the service is good, then I will leave 15%. If it's great, then I will leave 20%. If the service is terrible then possibly no tip. And since the service in asia is always great, I tend to leave the 20%. I also always tip the maids 50 baht, unless the room is a complete mess, then I tip more. This is around the exact amount I tip in the maids in the U.S for less service. Go figure?? ha ha ha!!! I basically hold any other country I visit to the same standards ... give or take .... to the ones I have in the U.S. If my drinks are really late at a bar, or the bartender blows me off, then they get less tip.

thanks the problem ABC. in the USA you are expected to tip. in the UK it is a foreign concept,i do tip,but i see many brits who get offended when they realise they are expected to tip a few Baht. it is just not in our culture,we are cheap charlies......lol. Bandit. what is 20 or 30 Baht to rich falangs like us?. could tell a story of an experience with 2 girls and 70 Baht, but will not.

ABC, Your post makes a lot of sense to me as I am a very generous person myself and like to tip a lot. Nokna, I know very well what a Thai can do with this amount of money, but that was not what I was talking about and I referred to Baht 10 or 20...

I find a 20% tip (20% of restaurant prices here in the west) sooooo much money. The only time I tip 20% is in Asia. I'm more like Big D... 10% in restaurants here. (and even then I expect 'better than average' to 'good' service). I think what gets me is the attitude, "they expect a tip" (again, here in the west... and without starting any nationalistic flame war's... I found the "expect a tip" mentality very over-powering in the states). That makes me want not to leave a tip at all.... I hate people EXPECTING something extra from me just for doing their job.

Quote: from BigDUSA on 11:43 am on Dec. 23, 2002 In the US, I tip 10% except in a small breakfast place I tip a buck. If your not happy with the service don't stiff em. Leave 2 cents that lets the person know what you thought of their "service". I have only had to do that once and she throw the 2cents at me I picked it up and put in my pocket.
ahahaha leave 2 cents.... that reminds me one cruel time, the manager threw me and my friends out because one of the girls (la jolla, california) didnt have an id, and he was very rude about it, and from the whispering i knew it was the waitress who had a big problem with it... i left her a similar feeling she left me with..... no tip and a spit loogie on top of the bar tab, folded up into the little folder.... (the girl was 28 years old in question... for all you who will jump on me about her doing her job!)

Bros, Another thing I was just thinking of is tipping in taxis. I usually tip between Baht 20 and 30 depending on the fare of the meter. But if I have to go agree on a fixed rate with the driver, I do never tip. In my eyes the tip is then already included in the overpriced rate, all the time though the drivers do still ask for a tip.

i never tip taxis, and always use the meter... ok, i leave them the change, 2-9 baht.... usually they dont understand where i want to go when i speak to them in english, so i have to speak thai to them to get where i want to go (yes, i know, no shit, i live in their thai country, what do i expect? haha) But hey, i took the time to learn his language, he could at least know basic 'taxi' english.... so nothing special tipswise from me... sry taximan

How about this for some fun? Tell the local taxi driver that you'll give him 200 Baht extra (tip) if he weaves in and out of traffic and drives like he's on yaa baa? Oh wait, I hear that's already included in the price?
