ONe concern which will make an employee-Mgr reluctant to take on an expatriate assignment with a reduction in pay allthough cost-of-living is lower, is pension. The nature of the expatriate is that he is going back to his home location and continues to generate pension with the employer back home. THe employer has no right to assume other than that the employee-mgr wil retire in his home country, hence he needs a corresponding salary for generating the pension.

This is a bit off the original heading of the thread (Western Salary).
May I suggest that the moderator makes Pension/Retirement Money Issues a separate thread? Highly usefull, and will attract more contributors with info we all want/need if the topic is visible under it's own heading.

My reasons:
In one year I will graduate (hopefully) after 22 years of learning. The average monthly starting salary in my country in 2003 for people with my education was 245.000 THB (the very first salary a newly educated gets). I always dreamed (and planned) about using the next 10 years of my life working in foreign countries but, as mentioned by another earlier, I would get about 60.000THB if I got a job in BKK the normal way (Granted I speak and write Thai & get all the permissions and so on). So this isn’t durable if I ever am to return to my country. If it has to be BKK (it doesn’t, USA is actually also in top of my short list) then I only see one alternative which was my initial question, to get employed in a firm in my own country and pray that an opportunity to move to BKK presents itself.

I can't believe how lucky I am, after reading some of these posts. I am employed as marketing director for Asia Pacific region of large international professional services firm. I currently do this from Sydney, but because I need to be in various offices across Asia regularly, it's daft to base myself here.
So I went to my bosses and said I'd be prepared to move to either bkk, manila or jakarta, so long as they maintained my salary at current level and gave me nominal 'hardship' allowance hehehe. In return, they save around US$5000 per month on airfares cos the flights are so much shorter withing asia than they are flying backwards and forwards from Sydney.
They win bigtime. I get a plum posting in Bkk for 2-3 years earning a western salary to boot. Oh, and I escape Australia's punative tax regime so I actually win again! Roll on later this year when it comes into effect!
Life is sweet.

My personal experience of this is that up until the mid 90s it was relatively easy to get expatriate packages in Bangkok and in fact all across Asia.
By this I am talking about:
A basic salary higher than at home
No taxation or company takes care of it
Car and sometimes driver
Business class flights home for all the family each year
Six weeks vacation each year
Fancy house
Local living allowance in local currency
International schools for your kids
Full medical plan for the family
Bonuses
Club memberships
Lavish expenses
Lots of opportunity for travel
Some companies have since used the over supply of expats in Asia to drive this down to:
A basic salary less than in home country
Pay your own tax
Uhhhh, and that is about it!!!!!
10 years ago my company were handing out packages for young single guys of about 350k and more like 600k for married with kids (school fees are a killer) up to huge sums.
Now I see members at my Club who are earning 60k per month and just glad that they have something.
If you want a big package then they have to really want you and have few choices. If you can get appointed as a senior manager transferred from the home office the chances are still good of getting an expat package.
Bring back the days of the 100k housing allowance (dreamy look on my face)
