Ok to summarize, I will take a bunch of TC's with me, and change about £100 = $178 (for u americans), from my local currency exchange, because you need cash for street markets/BG/ Street Kitchens etc. Some places and people won't take TC's, and then like I said I will have a bunch of TC's, and my ATM card if any other withdrawals are needed sound ok?

Take some smaller denomination TC's also. I do not see the point of running round using TC's for everything. Keep them in the safe, take one or two with you at the start of the day, and cash 'em up. Using cash just like you would at home is a much more natural feeling. Like imagine if you ran around your home town using TC's. A little strange right? So do what you do at home, but just add a little extra security and flexibility. Your not going to fall off the edge of the earth going to LOS.

I like to carry a mix, TC, cash and ATM, I have two cards and credit cards. I lock all this in the safe. I carry one days cash. I don't carry ATM card at night. I have had a credit card cloned at the Flipper Lodge in Pattaya. Didn't cost me anything but the cc company got hit hard. Twice.

Quote: from CiaoCiao on 3:03 pm on Sep. 8, 2004 The US Dollar is more universally accepted however.
Seriously not trying to get into some sort of argument, but I've heard Americans say this a lot....ever found anywhere where Sterling is not acceptable?..ever travelled with Sterling?..I haven't (to the first question)...in India which is a sizeable population, they craved Sterling over the dollar. Maybe in cash form in a back street brothel in Tijuana (I would know), but I've never had a hint of a problem with Sterling.

Thats because you plicks only take a bath once a month and the money exchanges want to get rid of you before ya stink the place up. Gee Finit, 3k in cash, you must have been saving them pennies from your low salaried job, take your own cut lunch to work with you do you. Sit alone in your cubicle with all your mates eating your homemade sandwiches and milk. JohnnyNoMates.

I would expect that the universality of the U.S. greenback that CiaoCiao is indicating is that it is the most commonly quoted exchange currency and is often at the top of the exchange list, the most commonly recognized currency (by sight), and the most commonly accepted cash money for small purchases and tips. Doesn't mean sterling is not accepted widely, but it is still no contest. Pay for your bar bill in USD anywhere in England? 80/90+% certain. Pay for your bar bill in Sterling in the U.S.A? Impossible 99% of the time. Coca Cola, Mickey Mouse, the US dollar, that's universality.

I agree that SWITCH is good at the ATMs but you get hit with 1.75 sterling charge every Baht 5000 if yer with HSBC! TCs are very useful and I try to keep a few hundred Baht from my last trip just to get me from the airport to the hotel, 'ave a nap then off to get more dosh after I freshen up the gulliver a bit. Cheers

sounds ok to me in the uk most banks now offer free tc's service so go with tcs I get £100 denominations and you find that all the money exchange booths offer a slightly better exchange for tc's than cash that goes for other currencies as well i also have about 2000 bhat from previous trips or I get it from the bank covers all thoose little things from the airport to a downtown hotel airport exchange booths offer a ruinous rate as for atm cards etc various banks various rates of exchage varies form card to card and atm atm so this is what I do get a shed load of £100 tcs have about 2000 bhat in small money some pounds but thats from getting back from heathrow change up money on a daily basis big purchases go with the credit card but watch out some people charge an extra 2 1/2 % if you use a credit card atm card as a last resort
