$500 TC are NO PROBLEM even for the smallest exchange kiosk.

I take them because I never keep track of the $20s and $100s that I used to bring.

With $500s, I don't need many. Therefore easy to keep track of.

HINT: keep the receipt... it has the Travellers Check number on it.

I just love to listen "experienced" travelers"

Bring an ATM... Bring cash... Bring TC's for an emergency.

ATM's are fine.. mnay ATM cards will charge u a foreign charge.. (1$) for using it. can take 15000 Baht a day out.. No problems..

If u Bring 100$ bills... dont bring any series older than year 2000. Have a hard time with those.

Not sure what you mean here as it is entirely possible that some posters could be virgins on this particular board but still have far more experience than you do.

I prefer travellers checks and I do bring an ATM for back up only. Not sure about the 15000 baht per day limit as it probably depends on your financial institution. ATM's have the best rate of exchange and the lowest fees but solely depending on them for funds during your entire stay IMO is risky for obvious reasons......the card could be consumed by the machine or the network could be down or you could lose your card or have it stolen. Yes, of course you could lose your money as well just like you could lose an ATM card which is why I favor the American Express Travellers Check.

I was just wondering if any chaps had any problems cashing TC's in the larger denominations.

I cashed most of my TC's at Bank of Bangkok in the Emporium (they have many other branches around town). They enter your information into their computers, which are linked to American Express, so they know for sure that the TC's you are cashing are not reported stolen. For that reason (assuming you have a valid passport and visa) they are at zero risk and will cash large denominations or a lot of smaller denominations. I noticed that at a few other banks, they went into a back room and made copies of my passport and did a lot of checking manual every time I cashed a check. So it may vary by bank, but most banks will not give you any problem.

Thanks Mr Alan, that's good info although I never go inside a bank to cash TC's, I just pop over to the nearest exchange booth for the convenience as sometimes I've consumed copius amounts of alcohol and feel uncomfortable going inside a bank. Might make an ass out of myself.

My recollection (I am not in BKK now) is that the fee is 20 baht per TC, plus 6 baht fee (regardless of number of TC's). So with a $500 TC you pay less fees as a percentage of money exchanged.

Keep in mind that TC's always get better exchange rates than cash, so even with the fee it is a good deal.
