I think it up to the bank there and then. There is no school book example how to do it. Having some friend in the bank might help.

With respect bangkoksexydotcom, I think MSB's explanation is more likely.

Well achieved it, My Thai bank of 4yrs, SCB turned me down, I went to Kasikorn, gave them the same paperwork, copy of my SCB bank book and they gave me a Gold card with 60K, 1 month later I wanted to buy a new Hi-fi from Lotus, decided to see if I could get it on a monthly Plan, handed over my Kasikorn gold card, they said they'd call me, they did, a week later I received a Lotus Visa card with a 90K limit.
TIT !

Good for you Meetywsg. About 6 years ago I got a 30,000 baht limit from BKK Bank (Silom HQ) where I have an account. About a year ago I gave them my documents again and asked them to increase the limit. My request was turned down for reasons I could not understand. The officer told me to try again in a few months. I didn't though, wasn't so important or no time, etc.

Anyway, a couple years ago I applied at SCB (Silom branch) where I also have an account but the manager told me that I'd have to leave whatever amount the credit card limit was as security in my account. Didn't do it.

I'm surprised on the previous page Abrak got such a good deal out of them. Guess it's at the individual officer's discretion at any branch.

Maybe I'll try Kasikorn too.

Seajohn > not sure if it makes any difference, but I applied at the Kasikorn branch in Seacon Square on Srinakarin road. Good luck.

Ah? Well as I know you, you probably walked in and they took one look and said "What we ain't givin you no CC card"

Has anyone tried what works in some other countries?
That is to get a secured CC by putting up all the money to get the credit you want to get.

Rack it up every month and pay it off. Wait a few months and then apply for an unsecured credit card. No idea if Thailand works the same but in many countries they don't know the first CC is a secured one all they seem to notice is your credit limit.

This is a well know way to increase your credit line even if you have shitty credit to start with.

Then cancel your secured CC card and get your money back after you have gotten your unsecured card.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Sunday 4 November 2007 :-

Credit cards land Bangkokians in debt
=============================

Soaring inflation has forced many Bangkok residents to live in heavy debt, and their major creditors are credit card issuers, according to a report by Kasikorn Research Center.

The Kasikorn survey among 1,450 Bangkokians with monthly earnings of 15,000 baht per month or less found that most faced heavy compound interest debts arising from the use of credit cards followed by mortgages for homes, and hire-purchase buying of automobiles or motorcycles by monthly installment.

Of the total debt, the survey showed that those earning less than Bt15,000 month must pay as much as 52.6 per cent for their credit card debts, 21.1 per cent for debts outside the formal legal system, 15.8 per cent for monthly installments to buy motorcycles and 5.3 per cent for housing loans.

For Bangkok households with monthly earnings of over Bt15,000, their debts incurred from the extended use of credit cards stand as high as 40 per cent followed by 28 per cent on payment of housing loans, 24 per cent on monthly installment for the purchase of cars and 4 per cent on monthly installment to buy motorcycles.

Insufficient income, indicated by 37.2 per cent of the respondents, was the main factor forcing people living in Bangkok to live in debt, said the report.
