In Bangkok, you won't experience any problem. Few of them do not accept but you can take a walk for another money exchange.
In pattaya, from my experience about 70% of them do not accept my T/C and I found one that is near soi 8 in 2nd pattaya road side.
So far only Tomas cook T/C. In thailand, Amercian Express is more acceptable over Tomascook.
Not sure what their 'scared of' as I've never had any problem cashing american express TC's, anywhere in Thailand, including 500 dollar denominations. Cashing one 500 TC is the same as cashing five 100 dollar TC's. Banks, exchange booths should not care.
Please note from a safety standpoint smaller denomination TC's are best and I guess if you're getting a great deal on the VISA TC"s that's fine, otherwise American Express TCs are ALWAYS the better choice as you will never have a problem with those.

I also had a lot of problems trying to cash VISA travellers checks in Pattaya. Next time I will bring American Express ones and these are accepted everywhere.

I've traveled to thailand over 10 yrs and I always have used traveller checks, never had any problems.
always used the 100 euro/pound ore dollar checks (american express ore thomas cook)
maybe they don't like the visa t/c for some reason ore the amounth of 500$ makes them scared....

The reason why banks like TC's and pay a higher exchange rate than cash, is that they don't have to worry about counterfeit currency. The TC companies will guarantee the TC's if the banks follows certain verification and customer id procedures. It may be that Visa does not provide the same level of gurantee for their TC's, or more likely is that not all banks in LOS have an easy way to verify the serial numbers on Visa TC's as compared to AMC and Thomas Cook.

I had no problem cashing $100USD Visa TC last month in Pattaya. Bank at the Royal Garden is good to go. Same with the bank on 2nd Road and soi 6.
