Quote: from philly on 9:57 am on Oct. 27, 2005 BTW, if the rate is 41b/1usd, you'll get 38.5 -39 at your hotel on $100 bills, and closer to 40 at the bank or money exchange, and somewhere in between at the airport. But don't think too much. A 1 baht diff in exchange is 100 baht diff on a 100 bill or $2.50. I only sweat the rate if I'm doing a thousand dollars as that represents a $25 difference per 1 baht swing. Rule 1 in BKK -- relax! You can't imagine the adventures the city will take you on. Enjoy
Thanks Philly, You are right that being a newbie can be stressful at times since it will be new territory for me and dont know what to expect. Useful info and encouragement is all I need and U have provided both (this also for all other bros that have helped, so dont want to leave you guys out.) BTW:Too bad U arrive on the 11th, I will touch down next week Nov 1 in BKK for 5 days then off to Phuket. Once again, Thanks guys. PT

Cash currency exchange is my field and I recommend the following: If bringing travellers checks, AMEX does carry a $1000.00 USD note. You'll only need to cash one. I recommend going to an actual bank to cash it, or one of the many currency exchanges near the Emporium at the BTS station, above the street. They'll charge a lower fee, about 20 baht + the stamp charge, usually 2 baht. The ratio difference from market is so close, it doesn't even register as a loss. That's the best deal with Travellers checks. Banks and currency exchanges charge a fee per travellers check, so if you bring a high denom, like one (1) $500 or one (1) $1000.00 check, you'll only get charged for the one check. That's the trick. If bringing cash, $100.00 bills get the best rate. Another trick I like is if you stay in Hong Kong, you can get a currency conversion to Hong Kong Dollars in Hong Kong at very near the currency, I recommend the outlets at Sheung Wan. Then any denomination of Hong Kong Dollars, in paper form, are accepted in Bangkok. The best rate I found for Hong Kong Dollars is at the currency exchange near the Emporium at the BTS station above the street. Want to save even more money? Take the airport bus like the A100 Silom or the A300 Skmvt when going to the hotel. 100 baht aircon. Going back to the airport, take the airport bus if leaving before 6:30am. Not much tracffic and even though you have to wait and will get hassled by the cab drivers, it's still 100 baht. LOL! After 6:30am, take the BTS to the last station (45 baht) and take a taxi to the airport from there, 100 baht + a tip. Then you will have all this money, cheap charlie! Gyaos.

Gyaos, Thanks for the info about the $1000 AMEX TC. Oddly enough, my credit union does not even carry the $500 AMEX TC! Pretty lame huh. Regards

Cashing large TC denominations might yield a slightly better rate of exchange but it also defeats the purpose of bringing TC's in the first place as if you cash a 1000 dollar TC into local currency, then lose the money or it gets stolen you cannot get the money replaced. From a safety standpoint, the best way to cash TC's is a little at a time with smaller denominations.

It is of no use to you now, since you have had your trip by now, but check out every exchangekiosk you walk by. You will notice that they all have a different exchangerate. And the next day with new rates you will notice that the best deal from yesterday can be the worst deal today. Happy hunting for the best rate. Oh, don't forget to look at the girls also.

Somewhat true, however when I cash one (1) $1000.00 TC, my job is to use the cash, not get it stolen, and not take my eyes off of it at anytime. Mind you, I wouldn't go to Soi Cowboy with all that money....only take with you what you plan to use. Of course, my theory on the use of travellers checks include the fact you never have to pay for them. AMEX charges 1% on $100.00. However, many banks give TCs for free. I get them free. In fact, I'm still trying to figure out if the currency exchange booths at the Narita Airport in Japan also give travellers checks for free? I had the weirdest conversation with a female teller in Japanese and I believe there was no cost to them. Anyone get TCs in Japan to verify that? TCs in Japan are just 1.5 yen from the market rate on the US Dollar. Gyaos.

Intertesting notes on exchanges. Did TC's so with the fee the rate is slightly lower than XC $100 notes. Plus my bank charged me for the TC's. Just be careful with your money. Have some pre written info for one of your CC's--ie the # for a cash advance in a dire emergency. Also it is wise to inform them that you will be in Thailand if you want to use that card. TG saw your safe combo or whatever. In Ptty exchanged $100 notes but got rejected on some. She threw it back at me and said it was silly money. Lesson do not bring the old style US notes--difficult to get exchanged. Also got another $100 note rejected b/c it was creased and was worn where the crease was. So when you are stocking up on $100s to bring on your trip, inspect the notes and ask your bank to give you new notes only--will save you a trip back to your hotel. Something new everytime. gym
