if u look at aapl right back to the 1980s u will see that it is one of the true "HOT" stocks, by which I mean when it is hot, it is very very hot, and when it is not it is awful! it isan innovation led company and jobs has been brillient at this. but it has never managed to sustain its SOMs. Fair to say that this will prove true for iPod too. Can it manage to innovate its way into other product areas? For sure yes. But history suggests there will be some bumps alon the way. In sum, aapl is a trading stock. You buy and hold for a couple of years and then get the hell out. When will that moment come? No idea, but it will come.

Darry is right. The key in what he says is consistency.
Any analyst that is consistently bad giving advice and recommendations is very valuable and one that would deserve a good raise. If anyone has any such analyst, I would very much like to be privy to his advice. Then I could make a fortune doing the opposite of all he recommends.

agree that India will be the new silicon valley. Better to dump your money there rather than buy Apple or MS.

Yes, in fact they are... US Wall Street Journal as well. You are implying that because of their 'holier than thou' brand names, your sources are somehow 100% bathed in truth juices? Hardly - especially when it comes to technology issues, most of the 'money' analysts and sources get most of it wrong.

As a former investment analyst I can tell you we were NOT 'paid to get it right'. We were paid to generate business for our brokerage and corporate finance departments. There is absolutely no correlation between being 'correct' and the amount of business generated.
Saying that a 'crap' company is 'great' or about to turn into a 'blue chip' tends to win plenty of business and juicy investment banking mandates. Hence large bonuses and retirement by the age of 35.
And Daffy if you equate past performance with future performance - comments on the lines of 'AAPL's performance over the past 5 years speaks for itself' then perhaps you should go back to the basics.

This wasn't actually my quote; I was quoting another poster. I am, of course, very familiar with the fact that an analyst often cannot express his honest opinion about a company, as that can, in extreme cases, cost him a job. The conflict of interest between the research department and, say, the investment banking department is very hard to resolve indeed.
