I've been here in Thailand for the last 15 years and I agree with 99% of what you say. I own a very successful bar in Phuket and I get the question almost daily "Is it difficult to open a bar around here" ??? I always try and discourage each one of them. I use the old adage "Know how to make a small fortune in Thailand ??? Bring a big one" !!!! I personally knew Roger Jennings from the "Alice Bar" in Patong who was murdered in his home by her relatives from Chiang Rai. He was brutally stabbed 19 times and some of the stab wounds were from his personal collection of swords !!! His wife Alice was seeing a local policeman and she spent from Mid December of 1997 to mid March of 1998 behind bars. She then paid a 600,000 Baht "fine" and got off. She has'nt been seen in Patong for years now but the old Alice bar has changed to Scruffy Murphy's Irish Pub earlier this year. Rogers brother was to afraid to come to Thailand fearing the same fate as Roger. The local Phuket Gazette was rumoured to have been threatened to NOT publish any more stories about the case. That also goes for the long buried story of the Chinese American Man named Dane Tong who was murdered here in Phuket by means of an 11 millimeter to the back of the head and one through the chest in June of 1997 . Both of these cases have gone by silently for years now. Goes to show that if you're "connected" crime does pay !!! A farang's life can be pretty cheap from I've seen. I personally knew both of these gentlemen. Neither in any way deserved what they got !!!
Oh yeah, from my experience it's not good to have family working in my business. You think it's hard to fire a staff where it's just about impossible to fire a "family" member short of selling your business !!! I've learned my lessons from years of living in Thailand before getting involved in business and learning from and observing other's mistakes. I don't recommend the business to anyone unless you're a complete masochist, but it can be VERY lucrative !!!
