Is the thai economy really getting strong?
The value of a currency is not necessarily related to the strength of a country's economy.

As has been explained by others, the baht has been traditionally undervalued, and the US dollar traditionally over-valued. Governments often try to manipulate the currency to increase exports and create jobs at home.

Offshore vs. onshore rate, onshore being higher. "Currency controls prevent taking advantage of the spread", he said, anticipating the next question

That is VERY strange - as right now xe.com says 60.29, with the dollar at 29.something.

Are you sure that isn't a misprint/you copying it wrong? The exchange rate does seem very volatile though - last week it was 62 to the £.

Any chance at all that 60.29 is the rate you get abroad and 67 the internal rate (I'm getting no, but if the army have brought in exchange controls, maybe there is a black market? HAVE the army brought in exchange controls?).

Or maybe, more likely (other than 67 being a mistake) then the post is saying that, with spread included, you pay 67B to buy £1 at the banks.

Anyone able to shed any light on this?

EDIT - just noticed xe says 'Notice: The THB rate shown below is the international rate. Rates used within Thailand may vary.'. Not sure how to interpret that - does it mean that you get WORSE rates in thailand (ie there is a government caused spread) or that there is an international rate which is consistently higher/lower than in thailand, and that this is held in place through exchange rate controls?

By the way, anyone know why is it that when you quote someone, it doesn't quote what they say automatically - you have to cut and paste their words between the quote HTML tags if you want to do this. This seems to be a new thing - wasn't like that a few days ago.

i don't think buying currency would be 67 baht = £1 and reversed £1 = 60 baht...

i started this post because Nationwide (my bank) will give you what XE.com states + no commission charges + no fees for taking out abroad. In feb it reached 70 baht (so my account using a cash machine said available funds 210000 baht) now the same amount £3000 would say 180000…

I was just trying to work out why the international exchange is valuing thai currency so highly…

Becasue the baht was artificially undervalued, and the US dollar was artificially over-valued. Many countries try to manipulate their currency (reduce the value) in order to increase exports (which increases jobs at home). Now that things have gotten a bit out control in the US with almost all manufacturing shifting to China (and elseswhere) the US is trying to reverse that trend and bring down the dollar to a more reasonable valuation.

Guys,
1UK pound gets you 67.4 baht in the money changer at PanthipPlaza!!
Sounds strange, yep. Nope, it has been hanging around here and higher for a long time. The dollar was at 32.4 in the same changer, euro at 45.7

Have a look at http://www.BangkokPost.net and check out the local exchange rate on the right. Click the heading exch rates.

Farangman4,

No, not new at all. It has been like that for a year I think.

The reason I was given is to cut down on unwanted text.
