Washington Mutual has a free checking account deal that also includes free international wire transfers. I have used this account to wire funds to my TGF's Bangkok Bank account - it worked fine and the wire was free - but I suspect they still make money off the currency conversion. One downside - you have to personally give them the signed wire request form, so it only works when you are in the US.

Mr. Alan, that option wasn't offered when I was discussing international transfers I'll pick their brain again, although CitiBank in BKK wouldn't be convenient for me

You are probably correct, but it was just a thought. I think that Citibank in BKK specializes in credit card accounts (and loan services), and I am not even sure they offer checking accounts.

I have a Citibank account in Japan and used to have one in the US. They could not be linked via internet and fund transfers were handled pretty much as if they were accounts from two entirely different banks. As it was explained to me at the time this was related to US law. Having to do with preventing those doing illegal business from being able to easily move their ill-gotten gains around the world too easily. Also related to the need to report any transfers in excess of $10K US to the powers that be. BTW - Citibank Thailand is pretty strict about allowing folks to open accounts and I do not know of anyone (farang) without a work permit that has an account with them. Location really is not that big of a deal as one can easily pull funds via ATM.

Just went to my local CitiBank here in L.A., got to talk w/the manager, you can transfer funds on-line to any CitiBank in the world free as long as you have an account Then I mentioned the BKK branch & that they require a work permit to open an account, I asked if you were already a CitiBank customer might this help get around this, the answer no, you've got to deal with whatever the local rules & regulations are In LOS might that mean lunch & tea money?

HOLY SHIT, when did all the bros become so cheap. $20 to send thousands of dollars from the US/Australia to the BK branch of Citibank sounds fair to me.

ItaiaThug, I think people where more thinking of saving a few dollars on small transfers,, sick Buffalo money etc. I've transfered over AUD $300,000 in 20-30K lots over the last couple of years and happily paid the AUD$30 fee each time, I have also happily filled the dumb paper work about what the money is for.I wonder if anyone actually reads those things?? But sending over $100 for a sick buffalo makes $20 look expensive. Mel

Washington Mutual(special checking accounts) is free for the wire transfer on this end but you are correct that the Thai bank still gets it's beak wet. For small transfers it's best to send over a no overdraft privilege ATM card and then just let them know how much they can take out. Make sure they use a bank ATM to take out the money or they(you) will be hit with fees.
