Almost all Asian nations try to keep the value of their currency down, and Thailand is no exception. They are a lot more concerned about jobs that produce exported goods and tourism, than they are concerned about their own citizens traveling abroad. The Bank of Thailand is often an agressive seller of Baht and buyer of Dollars or Euro in order to keep the value of the Baht down when they think it is too high. Similar actions are performed in other countries such as Japan. In China, because the value of their currency is set by the government instead of currency markets, the Chinese government has set their currency at artificially low values for a long time (which is why it seems like everything we buy these days is made in China).

Keeping partisan politics out of this forum is a very good idea. However, the value of the Baht does not exist in a vacuum. The value is relative to other currencies, and many people are concerned about the value of the Baht versus the US dollar. The value of the Baht versus the US dollar depends on things that happen in Thailand, but it also depends on things that happen in the US (and elsewhere).

Really? Guess they put someone else in charge over the at the BOT: http://www.forbes.com/afxnewslimited/feeds/afx/2008/08/20/afx5339846.html
Thai c.bank sells dlrs to support baht -traders 08.20.08, 2:15 AM ET SINGAPORE, Aug 20 (Reuters) - The Bank of Thailand sold dollars in the currency market on Wednesday to support the baht, traders said. 'They (the central bank) are intervening at 34.15,' said a trader in Bangkok. 'We see importers' demand (for dollars) this morning, especially from gold and oil companies.' A second trader also said he suspected the central bank was intervening near 34.15. The baht still slipped as low as 34.16 per dollar, its weakest level since early November.
And they have been in n' out of the market selling dollars to prop up the baht since at least early this month: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aNTn.brQyY6E
Thai Baht Rises From 1-Month Low on Central Bank; Bonds Decline Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) ``The Bank of Thailand has been in the market quite consistently,'' said Vishnu Varathan, an economist at Forecast Singapore Pte. The central bank, has been ``selling dollars to stall the dollar rally. We are seeing ongoing outflows,'' he said.

There's no contradiction between what Mr. Alan wrote and the Bank of Thailand intervening to stall the dollar's appreciation. The BOT wants to curb volatility in its currency - that's a central mandate for every central bank. Fast and furious fluctuations aren't good for any currency. However, the dollar, yen, euro, U.K. pound and Swiss franc are traded against each other in such vast amounts that the market itself tends to self-correct from sharp moves due to profit-taking and repeated adjustions of positions. But with lesser-traded currencies, particularly those of emerging market countries, there's a chance of "one-way" trading becoming entrenched. That would mean market players are only buying baht (as in December 2006) or selling it (as in July-August 2008). The more dominant the one-way trend becomes, the faster and farther the baht will move in that direction. In December 2006, the Thai government thought the baht's appreciation had become so serious that capital controls were promulgated to discourage speculative plays and re-introduce two-way risk to the market. When the baht started depreciating this summer, there was a big chance of a retreat turning into a rout. The BOT began intervening to prevent "disorderly market conditions," which are a bigger threat to the health of the baht (and the Thai economy) than its level on any given day. Evil

Hopefully, it will continue this journey all the way to January, when I'll need to exchange some currency.
