MrJoe
All these posts are probably all you need to know - good tips and from my POV totally accurate.
But I don't think you've gotten a simple answer to your simple question: " so if i only chose to spend $4,000 USD per month, I could live affluently in BKK? "
IMHO, (dependent on what your idea of affluence is) ABSOLUTELY.
( I'm starting to wonder if I even belong on this forum at all. BK is there a special section for us poor folk? Those who earn less than 100k baht per mo?))

Those 'serviced apartments' (e.g. Emporium Suites) in the 80K range are for corporate types who are getting a subsidy from their employers (tax writeoff) aren't they? Same applies to government and military, I know one defense attache type who has a 57,000 baht serviced apartment paid for out of his 70,000 baht a month allowance (not incl salary) and it's a "use it or lose it" situation. No incentive to find a less expensive place to live.

Ain't no English teachers living in Emporium Suites, I suppose...

Someone mentioned 'crime' as a consideration in choosing a neighborhood. In BANGKOK?  I'm sorry but violent crime is a rarity here, espcially against foreigners. Actually, I don't suppose I ought to be sorry for that...

It also has to be mentioned for those who aren't as familiar with BKK that there is no sprawl like bangkok sprawl-there is no one affluent area (How many of you live in posh buildings adjacent to ramshackle homes or even slums? I see a few hands raised.), one business area, etc. It's all spread out and mixed up.

TPE, I used to do pretty okay at 35K/month when I first got here, until last year when I started BangkokTonight. Now, I am having problems with 80K/month.

... and deserve every baht BK,  I'm proud of you the way you donate to Youth in Asia ! -  I remember running a 600 room hotel, along with 2 Night clubs,/Karaoke rooms/massage parlour/ 3 restaurants etc. - and copping 20,000 bt a month - and certainly not spending many nights in the managers suite alone !!    [ The Thong Tarin for those folk ever in need of a decent hotel in Surin ]

Mr Joe is right about the mixup of neighborhoods. My wife and I used to live (c.1995-96) in a medium sleazy apartment house off Soi 53 Sukhumvit, right behind the Pizza Hut called RICH INN. furnished 3 BR 1 Bath on 4th floor, elevator was always broken so a walkup, 6500 a month (maybe more now). Anyway lots of familiar TG faces from the bars living there too; a little yakuza bar across the street and another on the corner. As I said -- medium sleazy. But, not all that bad, we've seen worse. Anyway, two doors down on the other side of the soi lives former Prime Minister (twice) and head of Saha Union, Anand Panyarachun, there's still a police box there from the days when he had an official bodyguard.

Who knows, maybe Rich Inn has fixed the elevator? Or maybe some of you don't mind the walkup? I think it's a pretty good bargain if your budget is tight.

Thanks for all the info. here guys. Good stuff.

I have been travelling to SE Asia about every month for some time now and I am seriously thinking about getting a home base in BKK.

Saving flight and hotel costs alone would make it viable. But I am not sure if I could cope with the wear and tear on my body if I spent most of my time there.  hehehe

yes, i got what i asked for in that post, but let me refine my search criteria...  i plan to be reinvesting a goodp portion of my money into several business ventures, and saving some good coin at the same time, so I woild be looking for something in the following range for a monthly lease rate;

depending on if my partner wants to 'keep a room' in bkk,
2 bedroom 2 bath apartment,  the nicest, newest, in the nicest, newest part of town.. for no more than $1300USD / month

or
3 bedroom 2-3 bath, same part of town and class of apartment, no more than $1800USD...  this may be asking for too much, what do u think?
