My advice is to stay away from colored stones ('gems' is a serious misuse of terms) as you really need to know the business, and be a gemologist, which means if you aren't already in the business for real, you are just a victimization waiting to happen.
Also stay away from Thai gold (baht chains) not because you will be cheated but because every south Asian in the UK is flogging Indian gold, Paki gold, HK gold, etc. and you won't be able to realize the returns you will need to make this worthwhile.

If there is a large Asian community where you live you may try bringing back some packages of birds nest for making birds nest soup. In Chinatown here in Honolulu I have seen packages of birds nest go for as much as $1200 (51,500 Baht) and I have seen it in BKK for as little as 8000 baht. Anybody have any more advice on this?

like antique watches, gems, etc. birds nest and other expensive chinese herbs needs a lot of knowledge and expericence to trade them. theres many grade of bird nest, depending on the country of origin, the clarity, qualilty..... and many more. they may all look the same to u and me, but not to those experts who trade them!!
in asian countries, huge profits are made from inexpericenced people trying to buy all these chinese herbs and tonics, only to realise that they were ripped off when trying to resell them!!
my advice is to leave them to the experts!

One trip i had bought some thai silk for my PGF, I came right to work off the plane and was showing my boss the silk. When one of the woman workers came in. She thought it was the coolest stuff in the world. Well I was asked whens my next trip was and it was on from there I made a very good profit on my next trip. Thai silk

Actually this thread is rather predicated on a silly principle.
Yeah I know this forum is about helping newbies, but, when it comes to business, to finding a niche market that isn't being serviced, why would anyone who knows how to make money tell anyone else rather than doing it himself?
Making money isn't easy.
No one is going to hand over a gold mine for the asking.
I have friends who are traders in asian artifacts (www.tiger-tiger.com). They deal in Thai silk among other things and they have HUGE hassles with shipping out, documentation of origin (like did it come from Laos, or Thailand?) and labeling requirements that the vendors here do not meet, there are quality issues, and so on.
Making money is not easy. I MIGHT hand somebody an untried untested half researched idea that I'm too busy to study, and let them go through the learning curve; but not a tried and true moneymaker. Such do not grow on trees.
Anyway the only ideas I have are the ones I am already doing. Or one that I am in midst of, involving 8 years of my partner's personal research, three years of mine, $100,000 of my money down the rathole, and no guarantee that anything will come of it. THAT is how starting a new business goes. If it works I will retire rich, if it doesn't well, I'm 51 so how many more shots am I going to get?
Nobody gives that sort of thing away.
Better not to ask them to.
